What are the responsibilities and job description for the Archaeological Field Technician position at Grouse Mountain Environmental Consultants?
Grouse Mountain Environmental Consultants is seeking a seasonal archaeological Field Technician to join our team. The position begins in March and continues into November, although dates can be flexible to accommodate school start/end dates. As a paid internship, Grouse Mountain is happy to communicate with applicants and their professors to earn course credits.
As part of our team, you will work closely with our clients in the oil and gas industry, renewable energy industry, and government agencies across the western United States providing regulatory compliance support and developing solutions for environmental compliance and remediation programs. Specifically, Field Technicians will support the Crew Chief by identifying and documenting cultural resources throughout a wide range of physical and cultural landscapes across Wyoming and neighboring states.
Responsibilities:
- Communicate with Grouse Mountain Crew Chiefs and Principal Investigators to ensure project needs are being met
- Work with the Crew Chief to conduct pedestrian surveys, site evaluations, data recovery and construction monitoring
- Identify and document historic resources based on an understanding of historic and prehistoric history and artifacts of the High Plains, Northern Plains, and Great Basin regions.
- Effectively manage photography, GPS navigation, and note-taking/data collection on a rotating basis during field work
Minimum Requirements:
- A Bachelor’s degree [AS1] [TK2] in anthropology or archaeology, or a minimum of 18 hours of anthropology or archaeology coursework with two months field experience and a field school
- Experience in a range of field techniques including pedestrian survey, site testing, and excavation, with proficiency using Microsoft Operating Systems and software
- Experience with a handheld GPS unit for navigation and data collection, topographic maps, and a compass is required
- the ability to understand, implement and adhere to established data collection, inventory, and recording protocols
- Detail oriented and the capacity to collect and maintain field data in an organized manner that is easily understood and accessible to other resource staff
- Demonstrate an ability to work independently as well as cooperatively as part of a team, and communicate effectively both written and orally
- Ability to travel out of town, possess a clean and valid driver’s license, and the ability to safely operate a four-wheel drive vehicle on backcountry roads
- Ability to carry a backpack with equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds, and be in overall good physical condition
- Project work will be outside and in environments which may require hiking to remote and rugged locations during periods of extreme heat or cold for consecutive days
