Kitchen Educator
Reports to: Lead ESY Educator
Position Summary:
The Kitchen Educator is involved in teaching kitchen and garden classes and is responsible for the maintenance, care and upkeep of the kitchen classroom.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Maintains the order and cleanliness of kitchen as stated in the kitchen handbook and utilizing kitchen maintenance schedules
- Lead kitchen classes, guiding students through lesson execution, recipes, and cleanup.
- Remains familiar with both the students’ curriculum and the current harvest in the garden, to ensure being prepared to teach the kitchen and nutrition classes
- Collaborates with the Lead Kitchen Educator and garden staff on the design of grade appropriate kitchen activities
- Assists in the planning and executing of Family Cooking classes
- Helps maintain kitchen inventory
- Assists in planning and executing events at fall, winter, and summer camps and seasonal events throughout the school year
- Attends school-wide functions (i.e.: Open House, Showcase Night etc.)
- Maintain effective communication with Grow Public Schools staff and foundation partners
- Other related duties as needed
All Kitchen Staff Will:
- Participate in the implementation, set up, and teaching of daily lessons
- Help maintain kitchen facilities and equipment
- Help with daily and weekly kitchen work
- Teach or participate as needed in the garden
- Attend and participate in all staff meetings, garden walk-throughs and scheduled professional development days.
- Coordinate maintenance of kitchen facility and equipment including, dishwasher, refrigerators/freezers, ovens, stoves, washer/dryer, cooking tools, and knives.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- Ability to work with elementary and middle school children in an educational environment
- Ability to maintain order and safe working practices in a kitchen setting with young students
- Knowledge of effective and efficient kitchen techniques
- Ability to take direction and work on a variety of tasks simultaneously
- Ability to work collaboratively
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree preferred
- Experience in a culinary or kitchen setting a plus
- Experience working with young students preferred
- Educational experience in related fields preferred
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Ability to work with frequent interruption
- Ability to stand, stoop, reach and bend
- Ability to grasp and manipulate small and large objects
- Ability to read small print
- Ability to taste, smell and feel to determine quality of food
- Ability to stand for long periods of time
- Ability to work with and near electrical and other equipment
Salary : $24 - $26
