IT SPECIALIST Teaching Assistant (Part-Time)
DESCRIPTION
This opportunity is only open to alums who have exhibited exceptional performance while enrolled in Growing Home. The selected candidate will work with an experienced IT professional on various projects to support the mission and vision of Growing Home and enhance the learning experience of IT students by complementing the activities of the course instructor.
As an alumnus of the program, the successful candidate will be uniquely positioned to provide excellent mentorship and training to new students enrolled in the IT program. The TA will primarily report to the Workforce Development Manager and IT Specialist for continued career coaching, professional development, and occasional assistance with Growing Home projects.
ABOUT GROWING HOME
Growing Home is a non-profit urban farm and social enterprise in the Englewood neighborhood of Chicago. We serve our communities through local, healthy food access and robust workforce development that has pathways to sustainable careers. Our 10-week person-centered Information Technology training program includes a robust classroom curriculum, and holistic case management and support - all in-house. Our training program operates four cohorts over a calendar year.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Teaching Assistants perform many leadership, organizational and classroom management tasks to support both Instructors and students. Their duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to :
- Helping Teachers with lesson preparation, including collecting materials and setting up equipment
- Reviewing lessons or lectures with students on a one-on-one basis or in small groups
- Supervising students in class, between classes and during recreation periods and field trips
- Tracking attendance, grading assignments and calculating grades
- Giving extra help to students who need special accommodations or are struggling with a concept
- Collaborate with the Instructor to identify students issues and recommend solutions
- Assist with various tasks, including troubleshooting, installing, updating, and maintaining software and hardware
- Provide technical support to the staff and volunteers of the organization
- Participate in IT projects and initiatives that align with the participant and department goals
- Collect participant data via surveys to determine successAssist with creating resume / cover letter and LinkedIn profiles
- Assist with employment readiness training and job search
- Document your work and report your progress to the IT specialist
- Observe and document participants' vocational assets and limitations, and provide necessary tutoring and support
- Participate in workshops, training, and events that will enhance professional and personal development
- Ability to lift 50 lbs or more
- Other duties as assigned by the IT Instructor
This is a part-time position. TAs should normally work up to 25 hours per week. Workload may fluctuate from week to week, but a TA should speak to the instructor if they are unable to complete their work in 25 hours per week. Both the TA and the instructor are jointly responsible for ensuring that the workload time limit is not exceeded.
A TA may not be employed as a substitute instructor, where the effect is to relieve the instructor of his or her teaching responsibilities. (This is specifically prohibited by the Growing Home Policy.) In the event that an instructor is absent from work, they will normally ask another instructor to act as a substitute.
However, in the event of an emergency, the Workforce Development Manager may ask the TA to substitute for the instructor. A TA may decline to substitute for the instructor if they feel unprepared to lecture. Whenever a TA serves as a substitute lecturer, an Instructor shall be appointed to supervise.
