SUMMARY
Reporting to the Director of Safety and Security, the Claims and Risk Specialist is responsible for overseeing and managing all aspects of workers’ compensation claims, property damage, and bodily injury liability claims. This position plays a key role in ensuring compliance with relevant laws, policies, and procedures, and ensures that all necessary documentation is filed correctly and in a timely manner.
The Consultant will also manage preliminary investigations related to workers’ compensation claims, including managing claims files, tracking employees on light duty, and ensuring proper job assignments are made for these employees. In addition, this role is tasked with providing ongoing risk mitigation strategies, assisting with insurance-related matters, and ensuring effective management of both property and bodily injury claims.
This role demands attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and an understanding of workers’ compensation and liability processes in the transit industry. The Consultant will act as a critical liaison between the organization, employees, and external insurance providers to ensure smooth claims management and compliance.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Evaluate and negotiate settlements for property damage and bodily injury claims with low exposure.
- Attend depositions and trials, as necessary.
- Coordinate the collection of funds for subrogation claims with insurance companies or responsible parties.
- Collaborate with various departments to ensure claims are processed appropriately and efficiently.
- Work with internal and external parties to ensure workers' compensation, liability, and property damage claims are handled in a timely manner.
- Conduct interviews with injured employees to gather information for workers' compensation claims.
- Maintain detailed records on each injured employee’s case.
- Monitor the progress of injured employees and ensure compliance with Workers' Compensation laws and GRTC policies and procedures.
- Collaborate with department heads to administer light-duty assignments within employees' physical limitations.
- Attend Workers' Compensation hearings as required.
- Maintain records and files for bus accident claims.
- Investigate customer service complaints related to bus incidents, reviewing DVR and CCTV footage as needed.
- Assist with investigations of bus accidents, on-the-job injuries, and other safety-related incidents, including reviewing and extracting footage for evidence.
- Assist with the investigation and response to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests for relevant information.
- Perform records retention, clerical, and administrative duties as assigned.
- Work with other team members of the claims team to ensure cohesive and efficient handling of all claims.

Education and/or Experience
- Bachelor's degree in business administration, risk management, insurance, transportation safety, or a related field, or equivalent experience required.
- Preferred experience in handling workers' compensation, personal injury, and property damage claims, preferably in a transportation or transit-related environment, or in the insurance industry.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders, including employees, customers, insurance providers, and legal teams.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to negotiate and maintain relationships with internal and external partners, including insurance companies and legal representatives.
- Strong computer skills, with experience using claims management software, data entry systems, and relevant Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
