Job Description
The Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, and repair of school buses, district vehicles, and related equipment. This position plays a vital role in ensuring the safety, efficiency, and reliability of the transportation fleet. The Mechanic develops and promotes good community relations among various community members and school clientele.
Essential Physical Requirements:
- Frequent lifting of fifty (50) pounds
- Frequent overhead reaching and lifting of twenty (20) pounds
- Constant standing, walking, squatting, lying, and climbing
- Ability to work in various weather conditions and environments
- Must be at least 21 years old
Responsibilities:
- Inspect, diagnose, and repair mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues on school buses and other district vehicles.
- Assist with morning bus starts and ensure that the fleet is ready for use each day.
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on the fleet to ensure operational safety and efficiency.
- Maintain records of maintenance, inspections, and repairs following district and state requirements.
- Ensure compliance with state and federal vehicle safety standards.
- Respond to road service calls as needed to provide emergency repairs or support.
- Assist with the procurement and inventory management of tools, equipment, and parts.
- Ensure the proper operation of diagnostic tools and maintain a safe, clean work environment.
- Report any hazards, safety issues, or incidents to the Transportation Director immediately.
- Support other transportation department activities as needed, including occasional substitute duties for bus routes.
Certifications:
- Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B with School Bus and Air Brake Endorsements (required within 12 months of hire, training provided)
- Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification (Preferred)
Education & Experience:
- High School Diploma or Equivalent (Required)
- Technical certification or completion of an accredited mechanic apprenticeship program (Preferred)
- Minimum 2-3 years of experience as an automotive or diesel mechanic (Required)

Full Salary Range: $25.00 - $35.00 Hourly (Based on experience and qualifications)
