NATIONAL TRUST

We’re looking for an Archaeologist Project Manager to project manage the testing and development of an Archaeological Research Centre (ARC) concept – a long-term archaeological presence centred on participatory fieldwork experiences and community engagement – on the Attingham estate. This would operate in support of our visitor offer and particularly in association with the development of the new Attingham Active Outdoors Hub.

You'll be helping the National Trust to implement a core part of our charitable purpose, that the historic environment is relevant and accessible for everyone, for ever.

Salary £36,621 pro rata. Fixed term contract 30 hours per week for 10 months

What it's like to work here

The Attingham Estate contains a wealth of significant archaeological features, ranging from prehistory right up to WWII and including significant Roman archaeology associated with the city of Wroxeter,

You’ll be part of the Attingham active outdoor hub project team, a multidisciplinary team, including, archaeologist, curator, fundraiser, estate manager, project manager and property staff.

Your contractual place of work will be the National Trust regional hub office at Attingham Park. Our hybrid working policy means you can balance office and home working with site visits and meetings. We’ll talk about this in more detail at interview, but you should expect to be at Attingham for 70% of your working week.

What you'll be doing

Alongside desktop feasibility work for the practical functioning of an ARC at Attingham, you’ll lead a four-week summer excavation evaluating a ‘paid experiences’ approach for participants, alongside other community focussed archaeological events developed with local partners.

You will be responsible for commissioning and overseeing specialist contractors, ensuring the project achieves a professional archaeological standard and delivers a high level of engagement from community groups, visitors and participants.

You’ll work with our Volunteer & Community team on improving participation in the local area for children & young people, people with visible and invisible disabilities and people experiencing social and economic barriers.

Externally, you'll champion and raise the profile of the Trust’s archaeological work at Attingham. You’ll be accountable for establishing, developing, and maintaining relationships with the local stakeholders. Through proactive networking and influencing, you’ll work with a range of external partners to ensure community and visitor participation is at the heart of the project.

Longer-term you’ll help establish the foundations for community involvement in the ARC, building partnerships and identifying funding opportunities. You’ll ensure the project is fully evaluated to inform future development of the concept, including supporting fundraising applications to HLF (local) and Art Council as well as others.
