Summary Of Position

The Director of Facilities will be a strategic leader and thought partner for all building facilities required for the operation of the museum now and into the future. They will develop close and critical working relationships across the organization, collaborating with all departments in the organization to ensure that exhibitions, special events, and public programs are all supported by strong and efficient building systems.

Skill And Experience Requirements

  • BA/BS or equivalent experience in facilities management
  • A minimum of 10 years of facilities experience with progressive responsibility managing teams in multiple aspects of large and complex facilities and capital projects
  • Experience with leading strategic and managing long-range physical planning
  • Experience managing departmental and project-specific budgets
  • Experienced manager with a solid background in staff supervision and development
  • Experience with facilities with sophisticated systems and tight environmental limits is preferred
  • Computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience working in a cultural institution or landmarked buildings is a plus

Key Responsibilities

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Cross Department Project Management

  • Develop and sustain close and critical working relationships across the organization
  • Act as Project Manager and collaborator in planning, setting timelines, managing projects to completion and museum’s building-related capital improvement projects
  • Partner with Sustainability and Conservation colleagues to develop and implement a strategy for the museum’s resiliency planning and energy reduction measures
  • Oversee Chief Engineer in systems upgrades and maintenance and LL97 Compliance and long-term road map for emissions reduction
  • Along with the Sustainability Associate Director, responsible the implementation of reduction and reuse policies for stored materials and climate change resiliency
  • With the Chief Engineer managing the relationship with Local 30

Building

  • Direct operations relating to facilities management and condition assessment that benefit the mission and goals of the museum
  • Ensure that all venues, including art storage facilities, are well-maintained and efficiently managed
  • Develop an in-depth knowledge of all facilities in the Guggenheim portfolio, particularly with respect to complex features
  • Be a strategic partner to all departments
  • Provide proactive recommendations in long-range strategic planning for preventative maintenance and service, as well as future projects
  • Stay current with developments in the field to keep the museum as a thought leader
  • Ensure that all facilities-related work is performed safely and in compliance with all applicable safety and environmental regulations

Staffing

  • Be a thought leader in staffing for facilities, while supporting managers, supervisors, and employees
  • Responsible for maintaining and building a workforce and contractors that will manage the operational aspects of the building
  • Support and continue to implement Guggenheim’s DEAI policies and practices that foster a more diverse, equitable, accessible, and inclusive environment

Financial Responsibility

  • Prepare and manage the Facilities department’s budget, including capital projects budgets and operations and maintenance budgets and policies
  • In collaboration with other departments, oversee the planning, budgeting, bidding, and approval processes, for building construction projects and environmental health and safety and sustainability initiatives

Special Projects

  • Oversee capital grant proposals and projects. Develop a long-term capital replacement plan to track when systems and equipment needs to be replaced as part of the ongoing budget process

WORK DEMANDS And ENVIRONMENT

  • Ability to travel within the metropolitan area as required to perform the above duties at any of the Guggenheim’s owned or leased properties upon request.
  • Occasionally, work may be conducted outdoors, with exposure to varied weather conditions.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays on occasion.
  • Ability to lift at least 25 lbs.

Education

  • BA/BS or equivalent experience in facilities management
  • Architectural education is a plus.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Trade school, trade license/certifications/degrees or equivalent experience required.

REPORTS TO: Senior Director of Museum Operations

LOCATION: 1071 Fifth Avenue

WORK SCHEDULE: 40 Hours per Week, Schedule TBD

POSITION TYPE: Full-time, Exempt

SALARY: $135,000 - $150,000 annually
