Position Summary
Under the direction of the Athletics Director, develop, coordinate and administer a comprehensive sports medicine program for intercollegiate sports with a commitment to the care and equitable treatment of student-athletes and staff. The Assistant Director of Athletics for Sports Medicine (Asst. AD for Sports Med) serves as the head athletic trainer and will perform professional and administrative essentials for the successful implementation and development of the Sports Medicine program.
- Understands and appreciates the mission of Guilford College and is able to relate it to all constituencies.
- Develops overall sports medicine program for the College, including: injury prevention program, injury evaluation, concussion protocol, injury management, injury treatment and rehabilitation, proper record keeping, and educational program for student-athletes.
- Provides athletic training services for the College’s athletics department, including attendance at scheduled team practices, all home competitions, and away competitions as NCAA or conference required or deemed necessary.
- Knowledge of and adherence to, all sports medicine bylaws and/or mandates of the NCAA, Conference, or additional appropriate organizations.
- Equitably schedules and coordinates athletic training staff and students for coverage of team practices.
- Must ensure equity in the quality and scope of care for the athletics program.
- Responsible for the formation of the college’s athletic training staff with the approval of the athletics director, including hiring, training and supervision of assistant/associate athletic trainers, graduate assistant athletic trainers and student athletic trainers.
- Responsible for the supervision of the sports medicine staff, including equity of assignments and workloads.
- Maintains and ensures necessary record keeping and documentation.
- Knowledge of NCAA drug testing policies.
- Works in conjunction with the strength and conditioning staff to ensure safety in the design and implementation of fitness, nutrition and conditioning programs customized to meet individual athletes’ needs.
- Assists the Athletics Director in the development of the sports medicine program budget.
- Responsible for the adherence to the sports medicine budget.
- Evaluates and recommends to the athletics director, new techniques and equipment that would enhance and benefit the sports medicine program.
Oversees the College’s athletics insurance policy, including:
- Responsible for working with the Athletics Director to select the appropriate insurance broker for the secondary insurance policy.
- Coordinate medical appointments for all student-athletes with regards to their insurance.
- Serves as the NCAA Healthcare Administrator.
- Continuously updating all Sports Medicine policies to remain consistent with position statements issued by the NATA
- Educating student-athletes, coaches, athletic staff regarding concussion policy.
- Coordinate EMS coverage when necessary.
- Mentor the Sports Medicine Fellow placed at Guilford each academic year.
- Works in accordance with the Team Physician(s) as mandated by State and College requirements.
- Contributes to the overall success of the College by performing all other duties as determined by the Athletics Director.
Supervision:
- The Assistant Director of Athletics for Sports Medicine is supervised by the Athletics Director. They supervise Assistant Athletic Trainers, Athletic Trainer Interns, Graduate Assistants and Student Athletic Trainers.
