GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Coordinates and manages volunteer services and related outreach functions of the Animal Shelter.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class plans and manages the operation of the volunteer/outreach programs. Responsibilities include recruiting and scheduling volunteers to ensure maximum coverage and effectiveness; assures that all departmental procedures are followed; coordinates outreach opportunities and special events; handles public inquiries and any minor problem situations that may arise involving volunteer program. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Animal Operations Manager.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Duties and Tasks

  • Manages volunteer program efforts and operations including the recruiting, screening, training, and scheduling of volunteers homes.
  • Maintains files and records for volunteers.
  • Develops and maintains partnerships with outside agencies and parties to fulfill the volunteer needs of the Animal Shelter.
  • Assists with service requests or directs requests to the appropriate area.
  • Responds to inquiries from customers, both internally and externally. Assists customers, volunteers, and other stakeholders by providing the necessary requested information.
  • Communicates in-person, over the phone, email with other staff, agency clientele or members of the public.
  • Creates a schedule of outreach events for Animal Services functions. Coordinates and supports events to include activities such as planning, staffing, set up, and marketing.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with community stakeholders. Identifies and pursues opportunities for expanding outreach and event locations.
  • Assists staff with related functions and general care of the animals assigned to the adoption area.

RECRUITMENT STANDARDS
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of departmental policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of related community resources.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite.
  • General knowledge of animal care and behavior.
  • Ability to establish rapport and work effectively with a variety of program disciplines and community organizations to coordinate and solicit volunteer services.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
  • Ability to plan and organize work independently.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively to internal and external stakeholders, both verbally and in writing.

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent and two years of experience in an Animal Shelter, Veterinary Clinic, or related field.
  • Possession of valid driver's license.
  • Previous experience coordinating volunteer/outreach efforts for a shelter or clinic is preferred.

Supplemental Information

Working Conditions and Physical Demands of Work
Work is sedentary. Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking, standing, bending, carrying of light items such as papers, books, small parts, driving an automobile, or use of a PC to accomplish work objectives. No specific physical demands required. Mental demands and normal stress regarding achieving work deadlines are present.

Working conditions are located near a kennel environment with possible frequent exposure to laboratory conditions including hazardous materials, unfavorable fumes and odors, and working around animal body fluids and infectious diseases, and loud noises.

Driving is Essential
Driving is an essential requirement of this position whether driving a County owned or personal vehicle to conduct county business. Motor Vehicle Reports may be verified for valid driver's license and that the driving record is compatible with the county's driving criteria.
If a personal vehicle is operated for county business proper insurance is maintained as per Guilford County's vehicle use policy.
