Description

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

An employee in this class applies casefinding and educational techniques in working with individuals having sexual transmitted infection and other communicable or chronic diseases. Work is performed under the general direction of the health director or clinic director.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Duties and Tasks

  • Interviews individuals to provide education regarding their illness and to elicit contact and suspect information.
  • Follows up on interviews in tracing persons who may have contracted a communicable or chronic disease and motivates them to medical facilities for examination and required treatment.
  • Maintains case records and provides information from them to other health officials, physicians and authorized persons.
  • Prepares cases for prosecution when communicable disease laws are violated.
  • Assists in laboratory examinations of individuals attending the sexual health clinics.
  • Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the cause and effect of communicable and chronic diseases requiring special control procedure by a health department.
  • Ability to learn casefinding and educational techniques and to apply them in the area of communicable and chronic disease.
  • Ability to interpret and apply federal, state and local public health laws, rules and regulations that are applicable to communicable disease.
  • Ability to secure the cooperation of individuals and to elicit needed information.
  • Ability to present comments clearly and concisely in oral or written form.
  • Ability to deal tactfully with the public and to exercise good judgment in appraising situations and making decisions.

    Minimum Education & Experience

    Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university. (Paid employment in public health casefinding work may be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis.)
