JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Medical Billing Specialist
GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES: Responsible for gathering charge information, coding, entering into EMR billing system and completing billing process.
LOCATION: In medical office
SUPERVISON RECEIVED: Reports to Billing Supervisor.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None.
FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Researches all information needed to complete billing process.
- Codes information about procedures performed and diagnosis supporting charges.
- Assists in the processing of insurance claims including Medicare claims.
- Processes all insurance provider’s correspondence and insurance forms.
- Assists patients in completing all necessary forms, to include payment arrangements made with patients. Answers patient questions and concerns.
- Follows-up with insurance companies and ensures claims are paid/processed.
- Assists error resolution.
- Research return mail.
- Answers telephone, screens calls, takes messages, and provides information.
- Participate in regularly scheduled, routine coverage of the Billing Department to assist visiting patients.
- Participates in educational activities.
- Maintains strictest confidentiality.
- Other duties as assigned.
The job holder must demonstrate current competencies applicable to the job position.
EDUCATION: High school graduation or GED.
EXPEREINCE: Minimum of one year billing experience in health care organization.
REQUIREMENTS: None.
KNOWLEDGE:
- Knowledge of billing practices and medical office policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of coding and medical practice operating policies.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Knowledge of insurance industry.
- Knowledge of grammar, spelling, and punctuation to type correspondence.
SKILLS:
- Skill in computer programs, spreadsheets and applications.
- Skill in using a calculator.
- Skill in typing 40 wpm.
ABILITIES:
- Ability to understand and interpret policies and regulations.
- Ability to prepare documents in response to complaints and inquiries.
- Ability to examine documents for accuracy and completeness.
- Ability to read, understand, and follow oral and written instruction.
- Ability to sort and file materials correctly by alphabetical or numeric system.
- Ability to communicate effectively and work with others.
ENVIRONMENTAL / WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in an office environment. Involves frequent contact with staff, patients, and the public. Work may be stressful at times. Contact may involve dealing with angry or upset people.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS: Work may require hand dexterity for office machine operation, stooping and bending to files and supplies, mobility to complete errands or deliveries, or sitting for extended periods of time. Manual dexterity for using a calculator or computer keyboard.
