Accountability: Clinic Manager
Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
Includes the following. Other duties assigned. Determines animal requirements by conducting examinations and intake of new animals. Reviewing care plans and records; completing laboratory tests (Snap Test, Fecal Floats, etc), and X-rays. Cares for animals by taking vital signs; collecting samples; administering medications, drugs, and vaccines; bandaging and wrapping wounds; performing hydrotherapy, physical and inhalation therapies. Supports animal examinations by assembling required supplies and instruments; securing and bringing animals to examination room; restraining animals; providing assistance as directed; explaining animal's status to potential adopter/owner. Supports operations by assembling required supplies and instruments; setting-up surgery table instruments; restraining animals; operating and monitoring anesthetic machines; hooking-up ECG monitors; preparing surgical site; cleaning-up post-surgical site; maintaining sterile conditions; obtaining and verifying medications. Maintains animals by feeding and watering animals; cleaning animals' rooms, cages, and equipment; changing cages; observing for clinical signs of disease. Maintains safe, secure, healthy and humane environment by sterilizing and wrapping instruments; sanitizing and disinfecting holding and operating areas; storing sterile supplies; verifying shelf life; following standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations. Maintains animal records by documenting animal conditions, reactions, and changes; updating database. Maintains equipment by following operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining equipment supplies; performing preventive maintenance. Keeps supplies ready by inventorying stock. Enhances service reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
Representative Tasks & Major Responsibilities
- Thoroughly vaccinate all incoming animals & record keeping of animal
- Assessed incoming animals who may be ill, contagious, or in need of immediate veterinary attention and follows through with appropriate action.
- Performs vaccination testing and procedures on animals (snap test, microchips, surgical anesthesia, administering medications, suture & staple removal, wound dressing, fluid administration, skin scrapes, fecal float, draws blood, places IV catheters, Intubates animals, etc.)
- Performs daily rounds and views each animal, addressing any concerns in a timely fashion. Takes appropriate and immediate action in regards to any possible illness or injury. Hangs instruction cards on animals accordingly (cage cards & health charts.)
- Data entry of all vaccinations, surgical, medical & veterinarian notes into ShelterLuv.
- Assists veterinarian in surgery, recovery & exams. Clean, sterilize & properly stores/maintains all surgical equipment, gowns and the Surgery Room. Ensures all animals are on the surgery list for the week, including animals in foster. Provides post-operative care and supervision of surgery recipients.
- Inventory once a week of all medical supplies, vaccines, snap tests, medications etc.
- Proper animal holding
- Working knowledge of breeds, diseases, medical conditions and animal handling and behavior.
- Ability to handle animals safely and with patience and gentleness
- Ability to represent the GCHS in a professional manner in all situations with the public, volunteers, social media an overall a team player.
Safety:
- Follow all safety procedures and protocols set by GCHS SOP Manual
- Report all unsafe activity to the Clinic Manager
Qualifications/Skills Required:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Previous vet tech experience required
- Experience with animals
- Exhibit Maturity and good judgement
- Knowledge of animal behavior, documentation skills, analyzing information, clinical skills, creating a safe and effective environment, performing diagnostic procedures, use of medical technologies, attention to detail, patience, and verbal and written communication.
Physical Requirements:
- Hearing: Adequate to perform job duties in person and over the telephone.
- Speaking: Must be able to communicate clearly in person and over the telephone.
- Vision: Visual activity adequate to perform job duties, including reading information from printed sources and computer screens.
OTHER:
- Requires frequent bending, reaching, standing, walking, squatting and sitting, pushing and pulling exerted regularly throughout a regular work shift. Requires manual dexterity to operate equipment and perform manual responsibilities. Physical ability to transfer and restrain animals up to 100lbs.
- Ability to assess situations and animals for safety concerns and commitment to utilizing safety equipment and practices. Must be in good health. Any allergic condition that would be aggravated from exposure or through contact with animals or chemicals used to sanitize facilities, is a disqualification.
- Able to work in the busy, demanding environment of an animal shelter veterinary clinic.
- May be exposed to hostile or abusive members of the public.
- Must be able to deal with emotionally-charged public and carry a fast paced and changing work load which at times can be stressful.
- By nature of the job, there is occasional exposure with dead, injured, sick, unruly, vicious and/or dangerous animals in addition to exposure to parasites and infectious diseases
- Must be available and willing to work weekends, holidays, overtime, and attend mandatory meetings.
- Working conditions include working alone, working outside in varying weather conditions, and frequent interruptions.
- Fast paced, high volume medical caseload.

Pay: $14.00 - $18.00 per hour
