What are the responsibilities and job description for the Peer Support Specialist - Youth Mobile Crisis Response Team position at Gulf Coast Social Services?
Youth Mobile Crisis Response (MCR): A mobile service that is available as an initial intervention for individuals in a self-identified crisis (for the youth the caller is more likely to be a parent, guardian, family member, or a school), in which teams deploy to where the individual is located in the community.
What is a Peer Support Specialist? (per LDH Office of Behavioral Health)- see attached
A person in recovery from a behavioral condition (mental health, substance use or co-occurring) who provides mentoring, guidance and support services and offers their skills to others who are experiencing Behavioral health challenges and receiving Behavioral health services.
The Peer Support Specialist's role within the Behavioral health system of care is to provide supportive services, working in conjunction with clinical treatment providers.
Peer Support Specialist support individual with behavioral health conditions in their recovery.
Peer Support Specialist CAN assist the clinical process by performing such duties as;
- Identifying goals
- Assisting with treatment planning
- Like Skill coaching
- Resource referral
- Conducting recovery groups
- Assisting with discharge planning
Minimum Qualifications:
- Lived Experience: Peer Support Specialist must have lived in experience with a behavioral health diagnosis. A behavioral health diagnosis can include a diagnosis with mental health challenges, addiction challenges or co-occurring disorders
- Educational Standards: Peer Support Specialist must have a minimum of a high school diploma or a GED.
- Age Requirements: Peer Support Specialist must be at least 18 years of age
- Time in recovery: Peer Support Specialist must have at least (12) months of continuous demonstrated recovery as indicated by SAMSHA's working definition of recovery.
- Training: Must successfully complete a required peer training and credentialing program approved by the Office of Behavioral Health. This includes ongoing completion of continuing education requirements consistent with Louisiana requirements for peer support.
- A Peer Support Specialist must receive regularly scheduled clinical supervision from a Licensed Mental Health Professional (LMHP).
