JOB TITLE:                                MECHANIC 

LOCATION:                              BRAZORIA COUNTY

EMPLOYMENT STATUS:                 FULL-TIME, NON-EXEMPT, BENEFITS-ELIGIBLE

 

SUMMARY

 

The mechanic will be responsible for preventive maintenance and troubleshooting, repair & installation of equipment, including vehicles and machinery. The mechanic will perform a full range of skilled mechanical maintenance, diagnostic, inspection, and repair duties on GCTD vehicles and GCTD equipment. 

 

ESSENTIAL REQUIRED JOB DUTIES, ABILITIES, TRAITS 

 

  • Ability to evaluate transportation services and issue to and respond immediately according to established policies and procedures
  • Ability to plan and organize work priorities to include coordination of several projects at the same time while prioritizing requests
  • Accurately determine mechanical and repair needs
  • Adherence to all GCTD policies and procedures
  • Attend all mandatory program or staff meetings and complete training as required
  • Comply with transportation-related policies, as well as safety rules, and government regulations
  • Drive replacement vehicles to the site and call for wrecker service when needed
  • Inspect, maintain, overhaul, repair, and adjust gas- and diesel-powered vehicles & equipment as needed
  • Keep supervisors informed of issues related to the job
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work area; maintain and repair shop facilities and equipment
  • Maintain GCTD fleet of vehicles to include all vehicle maintenance which may include Inspecting, diagnosing, overhauling, adjusting, installing, repairing, and replacement of bearings, ignitions, carburetors, transmissions, differentials, axles, steering mechanisms, driveshafts, fenders, radiators, and front end and rear suspension systems (unless directed to contract out
  • Maintain inventory of parts and supplies on hand for the repair of vehicles; contact and compare vendors to obtain high-quality supplies for the best price
  • Maintaining equipment as required by GCTD, DOT, FMCSA, Texas DOT, and any local law enforcement standards
  • Operate a steam cleaner to clean GCTD vehicles when needed
  • Patch and install seat covers and other accessories on GCTD vehicles when needed
  • Perform acetylene and arc methods of welding on motorized vehicles and equipment
  • Perform electrical work on motorized vehicles and equipment
  • Perform emergency road service to disabled GCTD vehicles 
  • Perform prescribed preventative maintenance on GCTD vehicles
  • Perform the full range of journey-level mechanical work, including the diagnosing, troubleshooting, and repairing of equipment
  • Perform work in adherence to compliance with safe work practices and procedures
  • Prepare agendas and any reports needed
  • Provide professional, courteous, responsive, prompt, and efficient assistance to co-workers, customers, vendors, and the public
  • Remain current on all laws about safe maintenance and repair of GCTD vehicles
  • Respond immediately to audits or auditor requests 
  • Respond to requests for information by the required deadline, monitor system needs, and submit related requests for personnel, equipment, and services
  • Respond to requests for presentations promptly or as required by the executive director and or director of assets and operations
  • Responds to calls from line supervisors or operators to repair equipment as needed
  • Responsible for technical, clerical, and related administrative duties in the assigned work area
  • Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of vehicles
  • Road test all vehicles after work has been completed and follow up on repairs regarding all facility maintenance to ensure accuracy
  • Troubleshoot mechanical or electrical problems promptly
  • Will be responsible and accountable for the adherence to and promotion of the GCTD policies and procedures and will require communication with various departments and co-workers to foster, develop and continue our community partnerships as it relates to the position

  • Work independently in the absence of supervision
  • Work with the mechanic flee manager and director of assets and operations to maintain various building and vehicle maintenance records, including maintenance identification, date, vehicle mileage, service reports, inspection reports, maintenance reports, lubrication, and repairs performed

 

SUPERVISION

 

  • Receives direct supervision from the Fleet Manager

 

REQUIRED EDUCATION

  • High School Diploma, GED, or extensive experience in lieu of education will be evaluated as it relates to the position. Any education or experience above the required education and job duties of the position are preferred and will be evaluated as it relates to experience

 

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

 

  • Attention to detail and problem-solving skills
  • English proficiency
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to multi-task and prioritize work
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience as a maintenance technician mechanic, including experience working with cars, trucks, vans & buses, with gas and diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and or air brake systems
  • General understanding of electric and electrical controls
  • Knowledge of machine shop equipment, maintenance procedures, various vehicles, and OSHA laws
  • Knowledge of precision measuring instrument
  • Light commercial, industrial, and or commercial work experience.
  • Maintenance experience of vehicles such as cars, trucks, vans, and buses
  • Methods, techniques, and procedures used in the inspection, maintenance, overhaul, repair, and adjustment of gas- and diesel-powered equipment
  • Methods, techniques, and procedures used in the repair and adjustment of fuel, ignition, electrical and cooling systems, and chassis
  • Operational hazards and standard safety practices necessary in assigned work
  • Principles, practices, and procedures for recycling and disposing of hazardous waste from motorized vehicles and equipment
  • Procedures of preventive maintenance related to automotive vehicles
  • Requires proficiency with computer hardware and software to include Microsoft Office applications, using a computer with a keyboard and mouse, navigation with a web browser, checking and sending email, and use of internet search engines

  • Safe driving principles and practices
  • Strong communication, organizational, analytical, time management, problem-solving, and planning skills
  • Understanding of electrical installations with conduit and wiring practices

 

PREFERRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Any education or experience above the required education and job duties of the position are preferred and will be evaluated as it relates to experience

REQUIRED LICENSURE & CERTIFICATIONS

  • Active  and current DOT medical card 
  • At minimum active and valid vehicle liability insurance
  • No more than 3 moving or safety violations within the past 3 years 
  • Requires an active and valid Texas driver’s license 

WORKING CONDITIONS

 

  • May be required to perform vehicle, machine, and maintenance repairs or other duties depending upon the situation
  • Work hours will be assigned based on GCTD business needs and may include varied work hours, weekends, holidays, irregular hours, mornings, evenings, split shifts, and overtime
  • Operation of a communications device to contact appropriate parties during emergencies
  • Out of region travel may be required to attend training
  • Work will be performed in the office, field, and or remote settings

 

SPECIAL PROJECTS

 

  • Assist lead bus operators, managers, dispatchers, or directors when requested to complete special projects and complete all assignments within a negotiated time frame
  • Completion of other duties as assigned by supervisor as it relates to the program and position
