• Job Description : An Iron Worker Helper is required to provide assistance to Structural Welders and Ship Fitters within our busy Shipyard with lay-out, installation, and assembly of shipyard components in accordance with all applicable plans, specifications, codes, and industry standards. At times, a helper may be required to run errands, set up welding machines, retrieve items from the tool room, assist Iron Work employees with carrying tools, carry lift or gather materials or equipment, and, in general, "help" the Iron Working staff with their day-to-day duties and functions.Assist ironworkers in laying out workLearn to perform lay-out independentlyLearn to read and understand plans and specificationsVisualize two dimensional drawings in three dimensionsFollow established jobsite safety and regulations and maintain a safe and clean work areaIdentify safety hazards that all may be subject to and take all necessary corrective action to eliminate or minimize hazardsLoad, transport, unload, and furnish ironworkers with materials, tools, equipment, and suppliesClean work area and restock supplies and materials as necessary; assist in lifting, positioning, and securing of materials and workpieces during installation; may perform minor maintenance and cleaning activities of journeyperson's tools and equipmentLearn to use appropriate hand and power tools to assist the ironworkers in properly measuring, cutting, bending, fitting, and welding steel and assist in installing all other related items in accordance with the applicable plans and specificationsPerform other routine duties as directed by experienced craft workerDemands : Ability to perform repetitive movementsAbility to work overheadAbility to use hands to graspAbility to reach with armsAbility to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, squat, crawl, and twistAbility to sit, climb, and balanceClimb and maintain balance on steel framework, stairs, ladders, and scaffoldsAbility to frequently lift and / or push or pull up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and / or push or pull up to 50 poundsAbility to work up to a 12-hour shift in all weather and temperature extremesVision adequate to perform all required tasksAbility to move in and around confined and cluttered places and uneven areasFull range of motion and flexibility consistent with ageWork Environment : Employee will be required to wear personal protective equipment as needed to perform job tasksEmployee is regularly exposed to noise, dust, varying types of smellsEmployee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes, or airborne particles, must have ability to properly use and handle toxic or caustic chemicalsEmployee is regularly exposed to various outside weather conditionsEmployee is expected to work in a safe and efficient manner while maintaining a clean work area
