Position Overview:
Asphalt Laborers assist in the paving for roads, highways, and parking lots and are essential to the construction/paving crew. They use handheld tools to assist in the paving and construction of highways, private roadways, parking lots, and driveways.
Essential Functions and Duties:
Safety Responsibilities:
- Ensure a safe work environment in compliance with all safety policies and procedures using the appropriate tools and equipment for each task.
- Follow all company policies and OSHA regulations for safe working procedures and environment.
- Adhere to PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) policy and maintain individual PPE in a functional condition as supplied by the company.
- Report any safety issues to the Foreman, Superintendent, Safety Manager, or Human Resources Manager.
- Follow Traffic Control Crew instructions and practice safety standards per Company Safety Policy requirements.
Work Responsibilities:
- Assist construction/paving crew with various duties such as shoveling, raking, and flagging.
- Dig, spread, and level construction materials.
- Lift, carry, and hold materials, tools, and supplies.
- Assist in the placement, moving, and dismantling of signs, barricades, cones, and other traffic control devices.
- Operate handheld and power tools needed to complete jobs within specifications.
- Follow the direction of the Foreman regarding daily tasks and expectations for each specific project or job site.
- Work with the asphalt crew to pave roadways per plan specifications and perform tasks of other positions as needed to meet daily schedules and estimates.
- Assumes additional duties as assigned by supervisors.
Requirements:
- Physical ability to operate equipment under temperature extremes for extended hours (normal shift is 8-10 hours).
- Ability to withstand physical demands associated with heavy highway construction.
- Must be flexible with last-minute schedule changes, location changes, and shift changes.
- Willingness to work weekends when necessary and overtime when required.
- Availability to travel for out-of-town work.
- Requires riding to and from job sites. If operating a company vehicle, employee must meet Driver Qualification Standards.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. using proper lifting techniques and perform repetitive physical motions such as stretching, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, twisting, throwing, walking, standing, reaching, and squatting.
- Must demonstrate excellent safety awareness and a willingness to comply with company policies and safety standards.
- Must always wear proper attire including safety vests, safety glasses when appropriate, long pants, hard sole/close-toed shoes, and reflect a clean and presentable image.
Qualifications:
- High School diploma or GED preferred.
- 2 or more years of experience with asphalt crews preferred.
- Ability to handle several projects at once while maintaining tight deadlines.
- Project a positive and cooperative attitude by maintaining courteous and professional conduct with supervisors, co-workers, customers, and the public.
- Valid Driver’s License preferred.
- Must have legal authorization to work in the United States.
Working Conditions:
- Must be able to adapt and work in extreme weather temperatures.
