JOB TITLE: Assistant Band Director (10-months - 202 days)
RESPONSIBLE TO: Principal(s) and Band Director
POSITION OVERVIEW: Gulf Shores City Schools is seeking a dynamic and passionate educator to serve as Assistant Band Director for both Gulf Shores High School and Gulf Shores Middle School. This individual will work collaboratively with current directors to support a thriving band program serving approximately 350 students in grades 6–12. The ideal candidate will be a student-centered educator with a strong background in instrumental music education, capable of contributing to an already well-established and highly successful program.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university in Music Education or related field.
- Valid Alabama teaching certificate in Music Education or related field.
- Ability to meet suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.
- Experience in band instruction at the middle and/or high school level.
- Primary instrument of percussion preferred.
- Strong organizational, instructional, and communication skills.
- Effective interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on communication and collaboration with a wide variety of people and groups.
- Ability to work collaboratively as a productive team member.
- Ability to use technology to communicate, to plan and provide instruction, to facilitate student learning, to manage data, and to produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or financial information.
- Physical strength, mobility, dexterity, stamina, and acuity to perform job responsibilities.
- Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may require.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist in leading and teaching the Gulf Shores High School competitive marching band program.
- Co-teach concert bands at both the middle and high school levels with various autonomous classes.
- Teach and develop the steel drum ensemble and percussion classes at both schools.
- Work collaboratively with band directors to coordinate performances, assessments, and full program development.
- Contributes to the long-term vision of the music program, including feeder programs and vertical alignment.
- Serve as a positive role model for students and represent the program and school system with professionalism.
- Serves on school/system committees, task forces, planning teams, and advisory groups as required.
- Actively supervises students during assigned duty before, during and/or after school as directed.
- Supervises and/or assists with extracurricular and co-curricular activities as assigned.
- Supports school improvement initiatives by active participation in school activities, events, ceremonies, services and programs.
- Engages in personal professional growth and demonstrate professional ethics, sound judgment, and leadership.
- Maintains appropriate confidentiality regarding /student/school/workplace matters.
- Demonstrates initiative in identifying potential problems and/or opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility.
- Reports potential problems, unusual events, or work irregularities to appropriate administrative or supervisory personnel.
- Responds to inquiries, requests, constructive feedback, concerns and/or complaints in a timely and positive manner.
- Maintains and submits reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner.
- Properly uses and cares for equipment and material resources of the school system and effectively supervises and monitors students in the care, maintenance, and use of tools, equipment, and inventory.
- Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local regulations.
- Reports absences and take leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures.
- Performs any other job-related duties as assigned by the Principal or immediate supervisor.
