Trucking Yard Laborer

Summary

The Yard Laborer is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and organization of a trucking yard by manually moving trailers, performing basic maintenance checks on trucks and trailers, assisting with loading and unloading cargo, and operating yard equipment like forklifts to facilitate efficient movement of goods within the yard, all while adhering to strict safety protocols. The position works under direct supervision and performs routine daily activities related to the overall organization or the company yard, and provides day-to-day support of ongoing crew operations.

Essential Duties

• Maintain trucking yar by regularly cleaning and organizing the yard, including removing debris and debris from trailers and positioning trailers within the yard for loading and unloading.
• Perform basic maintenance tasks on trucks, trailers, and yard equipment by following manufacturer's instructions and company procedures.
• Securely load and unload cargo from trucks using appropriate equipment and techniques including by not limited to properly fitting and secure loads to ensure safety during transport.
• Operate yard tractors or other yard equipment to move trailers within the yard and follow required safety checks on equipment prior to use. Report any issue to Safety Manager and Yard Manager.
• Ensure compliance with Gulf States Trucking policies and procedures and with OSHA, FMSCA, DOT, and state and federal regulations.
• Maintain proper and professional channels of communication between the company and customers; foster long-term, positive working relationships and customer satisfaction.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

• Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.

Experience

• Minimum one (1) years of experience in related to maintenance, pipe or storage yard environment preferred.

License/Certifications

• Must have a current Texas driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record.
• Class B CDL preferred, but not required.

Must have the following skills and/or abilities:

• Working knowledge of yard tools and equipment to include maintenance and minor repairs.
• Strive to improve job skills and develop the potential for upward mobility.
• Working knowledge of truck basic loading, unloading, and securement techniques.
• Strong knowledge of FMCSA and DOT rules and regulations applicable to the work.
• Demonstrate sound judgment in decisions regarding maintaining tools and equipment.
• Model safety policies and procedures.
• Strong attention to detail, adhere to safe work practices, and ability to detect safety risks.
• Excellent and professional interpersonal and communication skills (both written and oral) when working with crew members, crew leaders, customers, vendors, etc.

Must be able to perform the following physical activity on a frequent to constant basis:

• Stand for 4–8 hours while loading, unloading, and securing cargo; maintaining tools and equipment; and ensuring hazard-free work areas.
• Use fingers and hands to handle equipment including cargo securement straps, chains, binders, and tie-downs.
• Hear average or normal conversations and comprehend ordinary information received through verbal communication.
• Sufficient visual acuity and depth perception to ensure excellent balance to complete job tasks and examine equipment.
• Lift, carry, push, or pull up to a minimum of 50lbs. of material, supplies, and cargo. (Must request help for loads over 75lbs.)
• Stand and walk on concrete, asphalt, dirt, and high platform surfaces for 8 or more hours per day.
• Repetitive squatting, reaching, and throwing motions as needed to perform the job duties.
• Stoop, climb, kneel, or reach, possibly in awkward positions, to provide technical support for machinery and equipment.
• Climb and descend a ladder and stairs going into or onto a truck or trailer to load, unload, and secure material, supplies, and cargo.
• Wear steel-toe boots; hard hat; and safety-approved glasses, gloves, long sleeves, and pants.

The work environment is usually outdoors and may require working in all types of weather conditions, including exposure to extreme heat, cold, and loud noises. The possibility to ascend and descend from dangerous heights, including standing and walking on high platforms. The job includes the use of a variety of machinery and hand-operated equipment, such as cargo securement straps, chains, binders, and tie-downs to perform their duties. Local travel may be required.
