What are the responsibilities and job description for the Head Cheer Coach position at Gunnison Valley High School?
Job Summary:
Instructs students in the fundamental skills of the sport/activity. Creates an environment that's conducive to personal development for team members through observing and evaluating as well as emphasizing teamwork and providing guidance for each student athlete. Develops sport-specific drill and practice activities to enhance the team's performance including exercises, game plans and teaching specific training rules to each player. Motivates students to do their best in academic studies and sports performance. Maintains a positive image for the school and team.
Oversees sporting trips and events that are beneficial to the team and the school. Engages in pep rallies and school meetings. Maintains team equipment, participates in the hiring and instructing of assistant coaches, and assists in scheduling sports activities while following a budget that conforms to the districts regulations.
Qualifications:
- Must have a high school diploma or equivalent
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- Familiar with the rules and regulations of the sport/activity
- Experience as an athlete and/or coach
- Work closely with program assistant coach(es)
- Ability to motivate, teach, and lead
- Be energetic, responsible, dependable, self motivated and punctual
- Have excellent public relation skills and work effectively with staff, parents and administration
- Experience working with teens and willingness to supervise on trips, camps and competitions
- Must pass a criminal background check
- Must be willing to complete Utah Coaching Certification requirements as outlined by the Utah High School Activities Association
Education and/or Experience:
Successful (recent) experience in the program in which applying (within last five (5) years) (desirable); Experience working directly with collegiate and/or public school districts (desirable); Must have demonstrated ability to lead young adults in an athletic setting, working knowledge of UHSAA rules/regulations, effective oral and written communication, and strong organizational skills. Demonstrate experience working with young adults in a positive environment.
Interpersonal Skills:
Works well with others from diverse backgrounds. Focuses on solving conflict, maintaining confidentiality, listening to others without interrupting, controlling emotions, remaining open to others’ ideas, and contributing to building a positive team spirit. Demonstrate ability to successfully coach, lead, and/or motivate adolescent students.
Knowledge of:
Appropriate laws on The Operating Principles of the UHSAA & District athletic rules and responsibilities for athletes and coaches; Effective management and leadership skills; Effective skills in the areas of communication and interpersonal skills; Importance of treating individuals with dignity and respect; Oral and written communication skills.
Licenses/Testing:
Be current in all District coaching requirements upon signing the coaching contract from the Human Resources department.
Non-Essential Functions
- Attends in-service training and staff meetings as needed
- Sanitize and cleans equipment
- Inspects facilities and athletic fields for health and safety concerns
