DESCRIPTION
Under the direction of the Operations Supervisor - FitNation, the Fitness Coordinator shall be responsible for opening FitNation (Nations Drive location) and operating the front desk, perform basic equipment maintenance, monitor and recommend repairs and replacement of fitness equipment, provide facility tours, sell memberships, and provide towel service at FitNation.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Complete all duties associated with the opening of FitNation
- Serve as the Manager on Duty during AM hours prior to the arrival of management staff.
Front Desk Operations
- Greet members and customers promptly in a friendly and professional manner.
- Answer phones, take daily admissions, and assist customers with all Membership, Group Exercise, Personal Training and other Fitness Center questions. Knowledge of additional Gurnee Park District offerings will also be required.
- Responsible for the appearance and upkeep of the Front Desk area. Ensure that the workspace is kept clean and clear of debris at all times.
- Conduct Fitness Center Tours.
- Input new member information into a computer and generate the membership ID card.
- Accept, input, and follow procedures to process activity registrations.
- Follow district’s sales policies and procedures for fitness area.
- Generate new memberships through lead follow up and existing member referrals as assigned.
- Communicate with active and non-active members through email and phone as assigned throughout the shift.
- Listen actively to connect members to the services that align with their interests and passions.
- Attend to member concerns in a positive and understanding manner. Take notes of their complaints and respond in a respectful, kind way. Help if possible, if not, explain to them that you will notify the Operations Supervisor - FitNation.
- If members report any equipment problems, must notify Supervisor in a timely manner.
Fitness Equipment Operations
- Establish and execute plan for the monitoring and maintenance of all fitness equipment. Make recommendations to the Operations Supervisor – FitNation for the repair and replacement of fitness equipment.
- This position involves coordinating and supervising the activities of the Gurnee Park District’s outside equipment repair vendors. The fitness equipment repair vendors will be used to assist with providing support for the repair and upkeep of our current equipment. Outside venders may also be asked to make recommendations and provide quotes for the purchase of new equipment.
- Recommend new fitness equipment purchases to the Operations Supervisor - FitNation and Director of Recreation to stay in line with trends in the fitness industry.
- Assist with the creation and monitoring of the fitness equipment line items of the overall fitness budget.
- Follow Daily Duties Checklist established by the Operations Supervisor – FitNation and complete all items during assigned shift.
- Works cooperatively with fellow staff and general public.
- Mark equipment that is not working with signage and a status update of the repair. Also note in some cases where an item my not be fixed (I.E. a monitor on a cardio machine)
- Assists members in machine usage and general fitness questions.
- Monitors the fitness facilities to ensure that patrons are complying with rules and regulations for patron safety.
- Available to work weekends, evenings and holidays when assigned at both fitness facilities.
- Understand and follow safety rules and regulations detailed in the Park District Employee Manual.

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience: At least three years of experience working with fitness equipment and/or fitness operations required.
- Education: Must be at least 18 years of age and have a high school diploma.
- Skills: Show skill in problem solving, decision making and advance planning. Must have excellent communication skills and be approachable and engaging with customers. Work assignments must be completed in an accurate and timely manner. Consistently demonstrate behavioral flexibility, patience and tact. Ability to work for extended periods on a computer display terminal.
- Certifications: Must maintain current First-Aid, CPR, and AED certifications.
- Competencies: Ability to use computer spreadsheet applications. Working knowledge of multi-user computer systems (RecTrac is the current system in use by the Park District). Knowledge of Park District activities and operations is a plus. Initiative to improve procedures, and to prepare reports and correspondence. Show good judgment in communicating with customers and the general public.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Ability to lift and move equipment and supplies up to 50 lbs.
- Read handwritten information and write legibly.
- Duties may include lifting, twisting, bending and squatting.
- 100% of the work day will be on your feet.
