The staff RN utilizes assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation in providing comprehensive and competent patient care. Provide effective interaction with patients, family members and staff, and coordinate interdepartmental patient care activities while maintaining nursing standards and policies of the department and GCH.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Utilize the nursing process, for the performance of patient care, to assess, plan, intervene, delegate, and evaluate patient care to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
- Perform complete admission assessment, including full body system analysis and home med reconciliation process for various patient types.
- Perform hourly patient rounding for all patient assignments.
- Perform patient/family teaching for assessed knowledge deficits.
- Evaluate patient progress toward desired outcomes prior to discharge.
- Demonstrate personal accountability in the delivery of patient care in a competent, professional, and compassionate manner.
- Utilize basic infection control measures and demonstrate basic infection control measures including handling of hazardous wastes and safety measures.
- Perform comprehensive nursing assessments in an efficient and effective manner, according to scope of practice.
- Perform and document all steps of the admission process, in initial interview, and ongoing assessments that reflect nursing interventions, patient responses, patient teaching, and status of outcomes at discharge.
- Assess and reassess pain. Utilize appropriate pain management techniques. Educate the patient/family regarding pain management.
- Promote patient independence by establishing patient care goals; teaching and counseling patients, friends, and family; and reinforcing their understanding of disease, medications, and self-care skills.
- Utilize assessment/observation and review of available data to develop a comprehensive nursing care plan (NCP) that supports the medical plan for each patient. Update NCP as indicated.
- Utilize appropriate nursing diagnosis definitions.
- Develop individualized nursing interventions.
- Include patient, family, or other support systems in implementation and education of intervention.
- Perform emergency treatment as required.
- Initiate or assist in patient care in an effective and responsive manner.
- Communicate and collaborate effectively with other health team members regarding patient condition, nursing plan of care, patient satisfaction needs and recommendations for meeting identified outcomes.
- Follow approved shift report format when communicating patient information.
- Identify and recognize abnormal symptoms/changes in patient condition, established priorities, and takes appropriate action. Appropriately report condition changes to medical provider.
- Promote and ensure patient safety in performance of all responsibilities.
- Administer medications, treatments, and procedures in a timely and safe manner according to physician orders and nursing policy (including appropriate performance of standard precautions, using two patient identifiers, and performing patient risk assessments).
- Demonstrate proficient technical/clinical skills and operational knowledge of equipment on unit.
- Inform and involve manager regarding patient care issues in a timely and appropriate manner.
- Utilize proper body mechanics, transfer/lifting techniques, and appropriate equipment to minimize fall risk to patient and injury to self.
- Report potential or actual system/process concerns and is actively engaged in problem solving for the solutions.
- Incorporate identified Performance Improvement changes into own practice/performance.
- Maintain knowledge of current nursing practice through reading current journal articles, utilizing hospital resources, attendance at outside educational events.
- Participate in department meetings and training opportunities to keep informed of changes affecting nursing care.
- Participate on nursing committees or groups as requested.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduate of accredited school of nursing; Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred
- Current license in the State of Iowa
- Dependent Adult and Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter Training
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) preferred
- Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) preferred
- Previous experience, preferred
