Summary
JOB DESCRIPTION
The primary responsibilities of the gross room assistant are related to specimen handling, verification and data entry. Additional responsibilities include gross dissection of small anatomic specimens and other technical assistance pertaining to the gross cutting room or histology department. This position performs under the direction of the Pathologist, Pathology Assistant and administratively reports to the Histology supervisor.
Experience
Previous experience in histology/pathology is highly preferred. Additionally experience with Laboratory Information systems or other computer systems is highly preferred. Previous experience in a hospital or clinical laboratory is highly preferred.
Education
Bachelor’s degree preferred. Requires a minimum of an associate’s degree (60 credit hours) in laboratory sciences. An HT, HTL or MLT is highly desired. Other degrees in combination with experience may be considered. Additionally, must be able to demonstrate ability to assume duties through successful completion of practical testing at the discretion of the Laboratory Director and or VP, Laboratory Services.

Essential Functions
- Accessions anatomic pathology specimens from within the hospitals/clinic and from regional offices using the Pathology LIS and Epic.
- Verification of patient information and specimen identification
- Ensure proper labeling, print cassettes, orders special procedures/stains when required
- Accurately and properly enters specimens in Pathology LIS based on incoming specimen descriptions
- Sets up and aligns/organizes the specimen types /cassettes and blocks per protocols for each specimen type, ensuring the right set up for all future steps in processing
- Assists in the paperwork and quick and accurate entry of frozen sections, including documentation of time frames and reporting.
- Documentation and follow-up of quality assurance issues (missing specimens, mislabeled/unlabeled specimens, identification errors, etc.) with proper documentation and reporting
- Performs regular ‘rounds’ to gather and transport specimens collected within the hospital or clinic offices and lab processing department to the histology/cutting room departments
- Answer the phone using proper telephone etiquette and properly triages calls within anatomic pathology, including paging and ensuring contact with the covering PA or pathologist.
- Maintain specimen records, including follow up on receipt of ordered specimens that are not received and documenting the receipt of them. Tracks down missing specimens.
- Assists the PA and gross tech with grossing of small surgical specimens (if needed/when time permits)
- May assist the PA or pathologist with the cutting and staining of frozen sections
- Operates the cryostat within scope of training and expertise
- Laboratory maintenance such as general cleaning of contaminated surfaces, specimen disposal, reagent disposal/recycling, cryostat maintenance, maintenance logbooks, etc
- Keeps up to date with knowledge of specimen preparation, anticoagulants and preservatives
- Follows all laboratory policies and procedures
- Maintains a safe work environment and wear all necessary PPE
- Able to interact positively and professionally with pathologists, clinicians, surgeons, residents, nurses, other lab personnel, etc
- Able to handle stressful situations and react professionally
- Other duties as assigned
