GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK
The Environmental Science Career and Technical Education Teacher instructs students on the principles of environmental science, preparing them for careers in conservation, natural resource management, environmental protection, outdoor recreation, parks and tourism systems management, and applied agricultural concepts. This role emphasizes hands-on learning through laboratory experiments, field studies, and real-world applications to develop students' technical skills and career readiness.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Knows and effectively communicates the Danville Public Schools philosophy and mission.
- Plans and implements a study program that meets students' needs, interests, and abilities.
- Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the developmental level of the students.
- Prepares for classes assigned and shows written evidence of preparation by DPS and state and federal guidelines.
- Guides the learning process towards the achievement of curriculum goals and, within the content of these goals, establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects with the ability to communicate these objectives effectively to students.
- Establishes high expectations for academic success and classroom behavior.
- Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media to meet the needs and capabilities of the student or students involved.
- Identifies special needs and seeks the assistance of DPS specialists.
- Assesses students' accomplishments regularly and provides progress reports to supervisors and parents.
- Maintains accurate and complete records as required by law and DPS policy.
- Assists in designing, upholding, and enforcing school rules, administrative regulations, and School Board Policy.
- Actively participates in faculty and/or department meetings.
- Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.
- Assists in selecting books, equipment, and other instructional materials.
- Establishes and maintains open lines of communication with students and their parents.
- Provides for professional growth through an ongoing program of reading, workshops, seminars, conferences, and/or advanced coursework at institutions of higher learning. Assists in preparing data for local, state, and federal reports.
- Assists in the collection of data for providing appropriate intervention.
- Participates in faculty committee meetings; chaperoning, counseling, and other similar responsibilities that are part of the school’s service in loco parentis; and exercises discretionary authority over day-to-day teaching functions.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Participates in and provides business partners for the CTE Advisory Board.
- Sponsors the local chapter of their respective CTSO (Career & Technical Student Organization); Encourages and assists students in competition preparation.
- Coordinates and oversees WBL experiences.
- Fosters workplace readiness skills by strategically integrating Virginia’s 5Cs into daily lesson plans.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Must have a strong understanding of ecological principles, conservation strategies, and sustainable resource management practices and the use of technology in instruction.
- Must have the knowledge of biological and biotechnological concepts, including genetic engineering, biosecurity, and sustainable agricultural practices, with the ability to integrate these into instruction.
- The ability to design and implement hands-on laboratory experiments and field studies to provide students with real-world applications of environmental science and agriculture.
- Must have the knowledge and experience to systematically plan, execute and evaluate individual and group instruction.
- Must be able to organize and manage appropriate classroom and field/laboratory instruction. Must possess excellent organizational, communications, public relations, and planning skills.
- The ability to work independently and accomplish established instructional objectives during the school year is essential.
- Must have the ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships and work collaboratively with administrators, supervisors, co-workers, and parents.
- Must be knowledgeable of innovative, nontraditional teaching strategies that have proven successful with students from diverse backgrounds performing at different academic levels.
- Some experience with Microsoft Office, online learning management software, the Internet, and Intranet is required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
A Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Biology Earth Science or Agriculture Education. One year of experience conducting lessons and assessing student progress, maintaining student discipline in the classroom, and meeting with parents to discuss student progress and problem areas are preferred. Experience providing ongoing academic guidance for students.

11 months (240 days); 8 hours per day
EVALUATION
Performance evaluation will be conducted annually by the School Principal on the effectiveness by which the employee has carried out the above responsibilities.
