GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK

Under the supervision of the Principal, the Mechatronics/Engineering Technology  Teacher will be an innovator who will organize and lead a high-tech Robotics lab.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Teach mechatronics and core elements of engineering technology to students
  • Plan and conduct training for students in the following areas: problem-based learning, design thinking, rapid prototyping, making, tinkering, and innovation, as well as any relevant software and equipment
  • Partner with teachers to help them discover how using robotics/mechatronics/engineering and its resources can enhance current lessons
  • Identify and use best practices in STEAM education and continually reflect on projects for ongoing improvement
  • Maintain the machines, tools, and materials, and re-order supplies as needed
  • Support and demonstrate commitment to the mission, vision, core principles, and policies of the Danville Public Schools
  • Adhere to all district policies, procedures, and business ethics codes
  • Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects and clearly and concisely communicate those objectives to students
  • Develop lesson plans and supplementary materials compatible with the division’s basic instructional philosophy and congruent with course standards; provide individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student and subgroups of students.
  • Identify, select, and modify instructional resources to meet the needs of students with varying backgrounds, learning styles, and special needs; incorporate new and emerging technology into the instructional process
  • Organize class time so that preparation, instruction, lab work, and cleanup are all accomplished, as applicable
  • Create a welcoming, supportive, challenging, and engaging learning environment for students; encourage cooperation among students
  • Model professional and ethical standards when dealing with students, parents, peers, and the community
  • Communicate necessary information regularly to students, colleagues, and parents regarding student progress and needs; establish and maintain cooperative relationships with co-workers relative to school matters
  • Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and self-selected professional growth activities
  • Participate in additional days of occupational-related instructional training (including, but not limited to: SkillsUSA competitions, teacher certification attainment, industry certification training, etc.)
  • Evaluate students' academic and social growth, prepare report cards, and keep appropriate records, including attendance reports, checklists, census forms, and other recordkeeping activities as necessary
  • Administer testing in accordance with division and State testing practices and requirements
  • Instruct students on appropriate safety measures and expectations; demonstrate and teach students about the use of eye protection, safety guards, and the proper use and safe operation of tools, machines, and equipment, as applicable
  • Manage the classroom to ensure the best use of instructional time; develop and implement appropriate classroom management strategies while maintaining high expectations for student behavior.
  • Work with post-secondary institutions to adhere to Dual Enrollment agreements, as applicable
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings and serve on staff committees
  • Facilitate Career and Technical Education (CTE) program advisory committee meetings
  • Sponsor the local chapter of their respective Career & Technical Student Organization (CTSO); encourage and assist students in competition preparation.
  • Coordinate and oversee Work-Based Learning (WBL) experiences
  • Foster workplace readiness skills by strategically integrating Virginia’s 5Cs (critical thinking, creative thinking, communication, collaboration, and citizenship) skills into daily lesson plans. 
  • Participate in and provide business partners for the CTE Advisory Board
  • Perform other duties as assigned


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Excellent project management, organizational, and interpersonal skills

  • Project-based learning experience
  • Genuine excitement for and ability to work with students, faculty, staff, and parents
  • Knowledge and experience with physical programming, robotics, and coding
  • Previous experience with Python and Scratch preferred
  • Previous Robotics experience with FIRST or VEX
  • Working knowledge of laser Cutters, 3D Printers, graphic design software, microcontroller programming software, and 3D design software
  • In-depth understanding of the creative culture
  • Experience in curriculum development; ability to create lesson plans to meet the needs of a diverse student population
  • Willingness to work collaboratively and serve as a resource for faculty
  • Commitment to student learning, personal growth, and professional development
  • Strong classroom management skills are required
  • Highly organized

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Must hold or be eligible for a Virginia teaching license with appropriate endorsement. 

 

DUAL ENROLLMENT EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT

Bachelor’s in teaching field or Associate’s in the teaching field with demonstrated competency in Engineering/Robotics/Mechatronics field. Two years’ related occupational experience.


PHYSICAL CONDITIONS AND WORK CONTACTS

Significant standing, walking, moving, carrying, and bending. Handles trades workers' equipment and materials. Must be able to exert a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential tasks



TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

11 months (220 days); 7.5 hours per day


EVALUATION

Performance evaluation will be conducted annually by the Principal on the effectiveness by which the employee has carried out the above responsibilities.
