What are the responsibilities and job description for the Product Owner position at gWorks?
The Opportunity
At gWorks, we help local governments lead with confidence and serve their communities more effectively. From financial accounting to GIS, asset management, and citizen engagement, our tools make complex systems simple — and our people make the difference.
We’re proud to support those who serve all of us.
The Role: Product Owner
As a Product Owner at gWorks, you’ll take full ownership of how our Utility Billing Hub evolves — from backlog to release. While the role emphasizes delivery and execution, we’re looking for someone who also brings strong product thinking, a knack for uncovering real user needs, and the curiosity to ask why, not just what.
You’ll collaborate closely with Product Managers, engineers, and client-facing teams to deliver scalable, intuitive features that make a meaningful difference for local governments. You’ll own the backlog and drive the sprint rhythm — but your fingerprints will be on everything from shaping the roadmap to measuring outcomes.
How You’ll Make an Impact Define and Support Product Vision
Partner with leadership and cross-functional teams to support a clear, actionable product vision that aligns with company strategy and directly supports the needs of internal and external users.
Own the Product and the Process
Take full accountability for translating product goals into actionable backlog items. Groom, prioritize, and continuously refine the backlog in collaboration with stakeholders. Make trade-offs, remove blockers, and keep teams focused on delivering value.
Lead Development Efforts
Break down product concepts into user stories, features, and acceptance criteria. Work daily with engineering and QA to support sprints, triage bugs, and maintain a high quality bar.
Drive Collaboration Across the Business
Act as the connective tissue between technical teams, client success, operations, and leadership. Gather feedback, align priorities, and maintain visibility throughout the product lifecycle.
Measure What Matters
Partner with QA, analytics, and support to define success metrics, monitor product performance, and adjust based on data and user feedback. Focus areas include usability, reliability, and scalability.
Enhance Utility Billing Capabilities
Lead initiatives to improve how municipalities bill, collect, reconcile, and manage utility data. You’ll work on integrations, automation, reporting, and more — all to modernize a mission-critical platform.
Champion Agile Execution
Play a hands-on role in Agile ceremonies — stand-ups, backlog grooming, sprint planning, reviews, retrospectives. Help the team stay focused, aligned, and continuously improving.
What You’ll Bring
- 4 years in a Product Owner, Product Manager, or similar role within SaaS, payments, or GovTech
- Product Thinking: You may not hold the Product Manager title, but you think like one — always asking how we can better serve the user and improve outcomes
- Strategic mindset with proven ability to define and execute on product roadmaps
- Client empathy and ability to translate user needs into clear, actionable backlog items
- Strong communication skills and the ability to rally teams around a shared goal
- Experience working in Agile teams and leading without direct authority
- Technical acumen and comfort working closely with engineering
- Adaptability to navigate ambiguity and shifting priorities
What Success Looks Like
In this role, success means:
- Delivering meaningful product improvements that create real impact for local governments
- Prioritizing ruthlessly and making informed trade-offs to keep teams focused and fast
- Ensuring product features are delivered on time, on budget, and with purpose
- Communicating product vision, goals, and outcomes clearly across teams
- Thinking like an owner — contributing beyond the current sprint to shape long-term success
- Continuously learning — from data, from clients, and from your teammates
Where You’ll Work
We support great work — from wherever you work best.
Omaha-based? You’ll follow our hybrid model, working remotely with in-office collaboration on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Remote? We’ve got your back. You’ll be fully supported to work from anywhere in the U.S.
That said — we believe great work happens in all kinds of places — but there’s real power in showing up together. We’re Omaha-first by design, and we prioritize building strong local teams to stay connected to each other and to the community we serve.
Why People Thrive at gWorks
We’re building more than software — we’re building a place where smart, driven people can do their best work and grow fast. Your work directly helps cities run better — and that’s work that matters. We hire you to think, lead, and act — not to wait for permission. We’ll challenge you, support you, and celebrate how far you go.
A Note to Candidates
