Assist technologists, technicians, and Pathologists by performing various clerical and laboratory related duties.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- As part of staff development activities, all Laboratory Phlebotomists employed full-time or part-time by Magruder Hospital will be evaluated for placement into the appropriate level of the Phlebotomist Ladder Program. Laboratory staff who are interested in pursuing advancement to the PHLEB-II or PHLEB-III levels of practice may apply when criteria has been met for application. New employees are eligible to participate in the phlebotomist ladder program after six months of employment and with approval of the Laboratory Director.
- Performs venipunctures, heelsticks, fingersticks, and other specimen collection procedures on inpatients, outpatients, emergency department patients, and patients outside the hospital facility in a competent manner that does not result in the need for repeat collections or valid complaints from patients or clients.
- Collects specimens for urine drug screens following the federal guidelines and identifies patients properly before specimen collection
- Processes outpatients, inpatients, emergency department patients, and patients outside the hospital facility by ordering the proper testing and having the proper distribution listed.
- Distributes reports by fax, mail, or in-house distribution to the proper physician and/or location.
- Files results, physician orders, and other laboratory paperwork in an efficient and prompt manner.
- Research requests from patients, physicians, nursing units, and other entities for information or reports
- Processes the final reports for urine drug screens and breath alcohols.
- Processes and keeps an accountability of referred specimens to include histology and cytology specimens.
- Restocks supplies and informs Laboratory Management when supplies need to be reordered.
- Performs and participates in community screening functions.
- Audits charges and other fiscal records (i.e. daily charges, end of month reports, census sheets, etc.) accurately and promptly.
- Evidences the knowledge and ability to assess and interpret data about the patient’s growth and development in order to identify each patient’s needs and provide the appropriate care, including age-related care, where appropriate. (Infant, Pediatric, Adolescence, Adult, Geriatric)
- Collects specimens from the dumbwaiter and nursing units.
- Records the cryostat temperature.
- Maintains work area in clean, orderly, and well-labeled condition, and maintains office equipment.
- Complies with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; advising management on needed actions; ensures compliance with Joint Commission and other external and internal regulatory agencies.
- Maintains the integrity of confidential patient information in accordance with HIPAA and hospital policy, including accessing, using and disclosing patient information relevant to the individual employee’s job duties. Also maintains confidentiality of other customer and hospital business affairs.
- Adheres to the standards of Magruder Hospital’s corporate compliance policies and seeks guidance and training when necessary to resolve questions about the policies. Reports violations in accordance with corporate compliance and organizational standards.
- Attendance is an essential function of this position. Reports to work on time and as scheduled; Shows respect for co-workers by following established break times; Keeps personal conversations and telephone calls to a minimum.
- Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected.
