Job Description:
Under the direction of the school principal, an elementary school counselor is responsible for implementing a comprehensive counseling and guidance program. Professional school counselors serve a crucial role in increasing student success. Through leadership, advocacy, and collaboration school counselors promote improved student learning and outcomes in academic, career, social, and emotional development for all students. School counselors utilize student-centered, data-driven results to coordinate comprehensive programs.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide collaborative (whole class) instruction in classroom K-6
- Provide individual counseling/guidance through direct services, including small group
- Implement effective prevention strategies
- Build staff understanding of counseling role
- Advocate for all students regardless of disability, economic status or background
- Consult with teachers, staff, and parents to address diverse needs of students
- Facilitate interventions for students with critical needs
- Plan and teach guidance curriculum with emphasis on college and career readiness components
- Interpret achievement, interest and aptitude assessment data for students and parents
- Provide responsive services to students (and families) in crisis
- Have knowledge and understanding of implementation of the Utah College and Career Readiness Program Model and Implementation
- Knowledge of school, district and community resources and programs
- Effectively and equitably disseminate information to students, parents, and school staff
- Demonstrate professional ethics as outlined by the Utah Professional Practices Advisory Commission.
- Conform to district policies including attendance, absences and evaluations.
Qualifications, Experience, and Education:
- Master's Degree in School Counseling
- Utah State Board of Education School Counseling license
- Previous experience in a school setting preferred
