The Director of Virtual Design and Construction (“VDC”) is responsible for driving the company's technological advancements and ensuring the seamless integration of cutting-edge design and construction methodologies. The Director of VDC will be responsible for leading a team of experts, fostering a culture of innovation, and implementing strategies that enhance project delivery and efficiency.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Leadership and Innovation: Serve as the company's innovation leader, driving the adoption of new technologies and methodologies in virtual design and construction.
- Strategic Planning: Develop and execute the VDC strategy aligned with the company's overall goals and vision.
- Team Management: Lead, mentor, and inspire a team of VDC professionals, fostering a collaborative and innovative work environment.
- Technology Integration: Oversee the integration of advanced technology solutions, such as Building Information Modeling (BIM), into the design and construction processes.
- Project Oversight: Ensure the successful implementation of VDC practices across all projects, enhancing productivity, quality, and cost-effectiveness.
- Stakeholder Collaboration: Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including architects, engineers, contractors, and clients, to drive project success through innovative solutions.
- Training and Development: Develop and deliver training programs to enhance the skills and knowledge of the VDC team and other project stakeholders.
- Continuous Improvement: Stay abreast of industry trends and advancements, continuously seeking opportunities to improve and innovate VDC practices.
Client Development & Relationship Skills
- Promote the growth and development of client and designer relationships.
- Represent H.J. Russell & Company in a professional and positive manner.
- Maintain a positive working relationship with the client and design team contacts with solution-oriented
- Participate in interviews for new work and provide modeling and rendering support for the presentation.
- Participate in industry-related organizations to network, improve personally and promote H.J. Russell & Company.
- Interact with owners, architects, engineers and subcontractors with positive results.
Design Coordination
- Establish the BIMxPlan objectives, procedures and standards.
- Work with project teams to ensure the design coordination supports the Project Specific Safety Plan.
- Maintain a knowledge of key project Contract terms, especially those in relationship to the BIMxPlan.
- Hold all VDC Managers accountable for the BIMxPlan.
- Keep current on technology trends and suggest refinements to VDC process.
- Assist the preconstruction team with recommended VDC budgeting scopes.
- Set up a profitable VDC department. Set budgets, track P&L reports, manage VDC manager’s time coding and billing and maximize markups where allowable in owner contracts.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervises Preconstruction Managers and Estimators. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work.
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor of Science degree from a four-year college or university
- Minimum 10 years of experience in Construction, at least 5 years in the VDC field.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in Architecture
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers and employees.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, etc.,) in its most difficult phases. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
Work in various offices, tour construction sites and work with estimating software. Must be able to perform under pressure and evaluate situations and make accurate decisions immediately.
