Job Summary:
H&L Environmental Services LLC is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Hazardous Waste Technician who will be at the front lines of environmental protection, ensuring the proper handling, disposal, and management of hazardous materials. This position requires a keen awareness of safety protocols, regulatory compliance, and a meticulous attitude toward waste management practices. As a Hazardous Waste Technician, you will work alongside environmental engineers, safety officers, and other specialists to mitigate potential risks associated with hazardous waste. This job not only demands technical skills and knowledge but also a commitment to safeguarding public health and the environment. This requires local residency in the Durham, NC area to facilitate in-person engagements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Inspect and identify hazardous materials
- Transport hazardous waste to designated disposal sites
- Maintain accurate records of waste materials
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations
- Operate and maintain hazardous waste equipment
- Conduct emergency response activities
- Collect samples of potentially hazardous materials
- Assist in the cleanup of hazardous spills
- Train other staff members on proper handling procedures
- Review and update safety protocols
Education/Experience:
The Hazardous Waste Technician shall have either education and/or experience as follows:
- Bachelor's degree in environmental health science, physical science, engineering science, industrial hygiene, chemistry, geology, or a related field.
- Two years of experience in hazardous materials management.
Mandatory Training/Certifications:
1. The Hazardous Waste Technician shall have the following:
- Hazardous Waste Operations (40 hr. initial) per OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120(e)(3)(i));
- Hazardous Materials Technician (24 hrs. equal to operations level plus additional competencies) per OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120(q)(6)(iii));
- Hazardous Materials Transportation per DOT 49 CFR172.700 (Subpart H)
- Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Hazardous Waste Annual Training per
- EPA 49 CFR 265.16;
- Personnel should also have experience performing removable and fixed radiation contamination surveys; should be knowledgeable and have experience in the use and calibration of Geiger counters; should have experience using a liquid scintillation counter; and be knowledgeable of basic radiation protection practices.
2. Asbestos surveyor shall have the following:
- Asbestos Inspector Training in accordance with 40CFR 76 3 Appendix C
Driver's License:
- Personnel must have a valid state driver's license.
Contact Information and Computer Access:
- Personnel must maintain phone and email contact information in the NIH NED database current.
- Personnel must respond to texts or emails sent from the Alert NIEHS system to verify worker safety and work readiness status.
- Personnel issued an NIH ID will be required to sign into the NIEHS computer system every 60 days to avoid suspension of their account.
Work Schedule
Routine work hours on NIEHS Campus:
- Eight hours each per work day, Monday through Friday, on the NIEHS campus no earlier than 6:30 AM
and no later than 5:30 PM.
