Position Title: Alternative Education- Elementary Teacher
Contract: 190 days

Primary Function:
The Elementary AE Teacher is responsible for providing specialized instruction and support to students who require an alternative learning environment due to behavioral, social-emotional, or academic challenges. This role involves implementing individualized learning plans, utilizing evidence-based interventions, and fostering a structured, positive, and inclusive classroom environment to support student success.
Key Responsibilities:
Instruction & Student Support
- Develop and implement individualized learning plans (IEPs, 504s, and behavior plans) based on student needs.
- Deliver engaging and differentiated instruction using evidence-based teaching practices aligned with state standards.
- Incorporate social-emotional learning (SEL) strategies to support student development.
- Utilize data to monitor student progress, adjust instruction, and communicate growth with stakeholders.
Behavioral & Social-Emotional Support
- Implement and reinforce positive behavior intervention strategies to promote self-regulation and appropriate behaviors.
- Provide de-escalation strategies and crisis intervention when necessary.
- Collaborate with school counselors, administrators, and other support staff to address behavioral concerns.
- Foster a supportive and structured learning environment that encourages student success.
Collaboration & Communication
- Work closely with general education teachers to support student inclusion in the least restrictive environment when appropriate.
- Communicate regularly with parents/guardians, support staff, and administration regarding student progress and needs.
- Participate in IEP meetings, professional development, and data team discussions.
- Serve as an advocate for AE students, ensuring they receive the necessary support to thrive academically and behaviorally.
Classroom Management & Compliance
- Maintain accurate records of student progress, attendance, and behavioral interventions.
- Ensure compliance with all state and federal laws regarding special education and alternative learning programs.
- Create a structured and safe learning space that promotes student engagement and academic growth.
Special Assignments: The AE teacher may be assigned other duties relevant to his/her teaching assignment not specifically listed in this position guide.
Organizational Relationships: The AE teacher will be expected to respond to reasonable requests by building-level leadership that is not in conflict with District policy or law.
Position Holder Qualifications: The AE teacher will hold a valid Arkansas teaching license for the teaching assignment or be compliant with Arkansas law/regulation that allows for completing the required license. Not meeting Arkansas licensing requirements will result in termination or nonrenewal to protect the school/district accreditation. Show proficiency in Science of Reading.
Employee Evaluation: The classroom teacher will be evaluated according to District policy and Arkansas law for certified employees.
