Position Title: Instrumentation and Electrical Designer
Reports to: Instrumentation and Electrical Department Manager
Position Status: Permanent Full Time
FLSA Status: Non- Exempt
Location: Pasadena, TX
Work Schedule: Standard schedule is Monday through Friday.
Purpose: Develop electrical and instrument design packages related to heavy industrial facilities. This will include assisting with the organization and planning of the overall design effort, and some mentoring of junior designers and draftsmen.
Core Job Responsibilities
- Gain clear understanding of scope, budget, and schedule for assigned tasks from supervisor
- Report change management when identified
- Prepare electrical designs for industrial projects.
- Apply design knowledge in power distribution, grounding, lighting, and control systems.
- Prepare drawings and sketches to support construction work, change orders, estimates, etc.
- Provide necessary building control lines and elevations for accurate measurement and correct installation of materials.
- Apply the NEC and perform calculations related to sizing cables and cable tray/conduit fill, etc..
- Apply knowledge of electrical engineering and design and be familiar with applicable Codes, standards, and acceptable industry practices.
- Prepare and disseminate all required documentation records such as status reports, punch lists describing work items to be done, sketches of work already completed, material requirement calculations, etc. to supervisor.
- Verify/design instrument and electrical installation details.
- Efficiently and accurately develop wiring and installation drawings for electrical equipment and instrumentation including grounding, lighting, cable tray, power routing plans, instrument location plans, wiring/loop diagrams, and motor schematics.
- Interact with designers and engineers within the E&I group, and from other disciplines, in a team environment to create multi-discipline design packages for construction.
- Work within company policy as outlined in the H M Employee Handbook as well as the H M Safety Manual and OSHA Safety rules.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor as needed.
- Identify changes to project scope and raise them to supervisor in a timely manner.
Essential Skills & Qualifications
- 5-8 years of AutoCAD and/or Microstation experience in heavy industrial projects
- Experience working on small to mid-capital projects
- Thorough understanding and efficiency with standard design and drafting practices
- Experience with instrumentation, hazardous location wiring practices, panel design, and DCS/PLC hardware
- Must be able to calculate voltage drop, conduit fill, cable tray fill, etc.
- NEC Code and Plant Specific Standard knowledge/comprehension a must
- Smart plant instrumentation and 3D modeling experience is a plus

Environment: Working conditions encountered in this job include those found in a typical office setting as well as an indoor/outdoor manufacturing setting which includes exposure to outside weather conditions, work at elevated heights, climbing of stairs and ladders, and physical manipulation of tools and mechanical equipment. This job demands the use of typical manufacturing personal protective equipment as well as advanced protective equipment as needed.
