Position Overview :

We are seeking a GIS Specialist to support NOAAs mission by developing high-quality, location-based visualizations of scientific data. The specialist will utilize Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software and related tools to create detailed maps and spatial analyses for various scientific and outreach purposes.

Key Responsibilities :

• Utilize GIS software (such as ArcGIS, QGIS, or other mapping tools) to analyze and visualize geospatial data.
• Develop interactive and static maps for use on websites, reports, and outreach materials, including :

Stock distribution maps to represent species populations and movements.

• Research area maps to display survey locations and study zones.
• Passive acoustic data maps to illustrate underwater sound monitoring results.
• Tagging data maps to track marine species and migration patterns.
• Work with scientific teams to collect, process, and interpret spatial data for effective decision-making.
• Ensure accuracy and consistency in geospatial datasets by performing quality control and data validation.
• Integrate GIS data with various environmental and oceanographic datasets to support NOAAs research initiatives.
• Assist in the development of GIS-based web applications and interactive dashboards for data visualization.
• Maintain and update GIS databases, ensuring proper documentation and metadata management.
• Collaborate with outreach and communication teams to create user-friendly visualizations for public engagement and education.

Preferred Qualifications :

• Proficiency in ArcGIS, QGIS, or other GIS software for spatial analysis and cartography.
• Experience working with marine, environmental, or ecological data is a plus.
• Knowledge of remote sensing, GPS data processing, and spatial statistics .
• Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex datasets and present findings visually.
• Familiarity with Python, R, or SQL for GIS automation and data management is desirable.
• Effective communication skills to collaborate with scientists, policymakers, and the public.
