Summary: Habitat for Humanity of the Greater La Crosse Region is in search of a seasoned construction professional to spearhead our home-building endeavors in the role of Construction Manager. This is not your typical construction management position. With Habitat for Humanity, you will lead teams of volunteers - often individuals with minimal to no construction background - to finalize 4-6 homes annually. This role necessitates exceptional communication skills, a commitment to prioritizing safety, and, really, a considerable amount of patience.

The Construction Manager is responsible for managing aspects of the day-to-day construction, and overseeing the Affiliate’s home-building program. S/he is responsible for ensuring the successful completion of projects within budget, on-time, and in compliance with applicable building codes and affiliate design specifications as set by the Executive Director and Board of Directors.

Responsibilities

Construction Management:

  • Responsible for development and management of key programs that support the construction process, including quality control, energy efficiency, safety, and material and house sustainability. Seeks to identify and implement new and innovative construction techniques and efficiencies.
  • Monitors, reports, and develops corrective actions as needed to ensure that housing products continually meet or exceed established standards.
  • Manage all aspects of construction: participate in creation of house plans, create cost estimates/budget, request and review bids from subcontractors, create construction schedules, acquire all permits, schedule inspections, order materials, the day-to-day operations.
  • Manage construction resources (vehicles, tools, equipment) to minimize theft and loss; monitor condition of pickup truck, maintain and clean it; organize tool storage and keep inventory records current.
  • Work with the ReStore Manager to utilize ReStore donations as appropriate to reduce the cost of construction and rehab of Habitat homes.
  • Operate in compliance with all guidelines and policies of Habitat for Humanity of The Greater La Crosse Region, Habitat for Humanity International, and all municipal/local/state building codes and regulations.
  • Review the affiliate safety policy annually; consistently enforce safety rules, including use of safety equipment, receipt of liability waivers from volunteers, verify parental permission for minors, and enforce restrictions on activities and use of power tools.
  • Work in compliance with relevant grants.
  • The Executive Director & Construction Director may assign other duties.

Supervision Responsibilities:

  • Provide supervision of all members on the construction sites.
  • Monitors staff performance and provides feedback regularly, conducts weekly check-ins, and conducts annual performance reviews for all direct reports.

Volunteer Management:

  • Work with the Volunteer Coordinator to ensure the proper number of volunteers on site and to provide individuals and partner families with meaningful volunteer experiences.
  • Work closely with the Partner Family throughout the building process to ensure the family is assigned duties to complete their sweat equity requirement.

Financial Management:

  • Negotiate prices and timelines for subcontracted services in conjunction with the Executive Director & Construction Director
  • Negotiate prices for materials in conjunction with the Executive Director & Construction Director.
  • Monitor costs throughout construction to ensure projects are completed at or below budget.
  • Identify and initiate opportunities to reduce project costs and create operational efficiencies.

Requirements

  • Mission driven. Understanding of and ability to articulate Habitat for Humanity’s mission and goals.
  • Evening or weekend meetings may occasionally be required.
  • Thoroughly demonstrated knowledge of residential construction, building materials and techniques, understanding of subcontractor work and requirements, construction management skills, job safety skills, and Energy Star requirements.
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Good organizational skills with the ability to simultaneously manage/direct changing teams on multiple projects and sites, including new home construction, Remodel Construction, and Modular Home Construction.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with people from different and diverse backgrounds; must be able to develop a good rapport with volunteers, subcontractors, partner families, and other community partners.
  • Valid Driver’s License, ability to drive affiliate vehicle(s), and insurable under affiliate driver’s policy.
  • Independent (able to work productively with little supervision)
  • Goal-oriented / focused on productivity.

  • Treats others with respect and patience; acts in a professional manner
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • At least 5 years of related experience is required.
