Role

The Executive Director (ED) of HfHUK is the senior executive of the organization responsible for all facets of affiliate operations and administration. The ED is the primary representative of HfHUK in its dealings with the community, staff, volunteers, donors and other constituencies.

The ED reports to and takes direction from the Executive Committee of the HfHUK Board of Directors and serves at the pleasure of the Board.

The ED must be an effective advocate for the HfH mission and a high-profile leader in fundraising activities, government and community relations. They shall maintain an awareness of and actively pursue a broad range of potential sources of funding and subsidies.

The ED must be an effective administrator with financial management, strategic planning, staff supervision and leadership skills.

Ethics

As the individual directly responsible for the reputation and good standing of the organization, it is imperative that they uphold the highest ethical standards of integrity and honesty, have unimpeachable credibility and demonstrate compassion in all of their activities and dealings.

Knowledge

The ED must be knowledgeable of and ensure compliance with all applicable legal requirements and standards for the activities of the affiliate including those governing 501(C)(3) corporations, affordable housing laws, policies and issues, residential construction, mortgage lending (origination, underwriting, servicing), affiliate bylaws, HfHI requirements as well as the policies and procedures adopted by the affiliate. They will be expected to quickly become expert in these matters.

The ED shall be responsible to maintain HfHUK Good Standing status and provides the required annual Certification and an accurate QA Checklist.

This individual must keep current with developments and evolving best practices in these areas. They are expected to maintain productive and effective relationships with HfHI, the Florida SSO and other Habitat affiliates, taking advantage of the resources and experience base which they provide.

Skills

The ED must be able to effectively manage the assets of the affiliate - human, physical and financial.

The ED shall direct, manage and supervise the activities of all staff members.

They must have excellent communications skills, being able to express ideas clearly, accurately and concisely. They need to be a willing, patient listener and be able to inspire through presentation of information.

Must be proficient in public speaking and the use of a broad range of communications media (internet, e-mail, web-based platforms, etc.) and basic business software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.).

They are responsible for the development and maintenance of positive, supportive and productive relationships with the HfHUK Board of Directors and each of its committees. They are responsible to administer an effective board orientation and training program for the board. They will assist the committees and support their efficient operation. The ED will provide a monthly report to the Board summarizing significant accomplishments, upcoming activities and identifying challenges.

The ED must be able to effectively organize and manage people and projects, pull together diverse groups of people and develop them into highly effective teams. They are expected to build and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with co-workers and external parties, including those with those over whom they have no direct authority.

The ED is responsible to create and maintain an environment which attracts, keeps and motivates staff and volunteers. They are responsible for the supervision, development and objective assessment of staff performance in collaboration with the Executive Committee. As such, they must possess a working knowledge of and ensure compliance with applicable employment law and be proficient in management best practices.

The ED is responsible for working with the Fundraising Committee to develop, lead and execute a robust range of fundraising activities to support affiliate operations and their building plans. They will diligently pursue available grants and provide reports and accounting records as required.

The ED is responsible for the financial activities of the affiliate including the development of accurate budgets for board review and approval, preparation of forecasts, management of expenditures within approved budgets, compliance with accounting standards, banking and reporting. They shall be the primary interface with external accountants and auditors.

The ED is responsible for the oversight of all outsourced functions including lobbying, mortgage servicing and mortgage origination, as applicable.

They need to understand brand value and be accomplished at marketing strategy, research and planning. The ED is expected to use these skills to establish and maintain the position of the organization and to secure effective partnerships.

The ED must be able to understand and deal effectively with complexity. They need to be able to quickly master new technical, organization and business knowledge. They must be capable of handling multiple priorities and deadlines effectively. The ED is expected to timely accomplish assigned tasks and to provide regular accurate progress reports.

The ED must demonstrate a strong commitment to the success of the organization and be willing to sacrifice for that success.

They must be able to inspire and motivate others to contribute and perform at their best.

The ED must be able to adapt to changed conditions and be open to new ideas and methods. They must take seriously ideas that are different from his/her own and accept criticism well. They are expected to seek out experiences that may change perspective and/or provide an opportunity to learn new things. They will seek out mentors from whom to learn.

The ED must have an accurate picture of their own strengths and weaknesses; learn from experiences and make needed adjustments in their own behaviors.

Qualifications

It is expected that the ED will have earned a BA or BS (public relations, business, marketing or non-profit administration preferred), have supervisory and leadership experience with a 501(C)(3) or other related organization. A master’s level degree is preferred (MBA, JD, etc.). A successful ED will possess an entrepreneurial, results-driven style and an ability to identify and implement creative approaches to various projects. Given their broad range of responsibilities, the ED must be a quick study, knowledgeable, adept at problem solving, able to effectively multi-task and driven to achieve results. Regardless of formal education and work experience, their professional experience and references will be reflective of these capabilities. They must be able to travel within Monroe County to participate in relevant functions and gatherings.

Position

This is a salaried (exempt, non-compensable) position. Work hours will vary and will regularly include extended workdays as well as weekend hours totaling more than 40 hours per week. Salary will be market competitive for the experience, knowledge level and performance of the individual.
