What are the responsibilities and job description for the Executive Editor, Little, Brown position at Hachette Book Group?
The Executive Editor will acquire and manage nonfiction book projects, oversee and analyze book budgets and be responsibility for achieving assigned sales, profit and return on investment goals. This professional reports to the Editor-in-Chief.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for approximately 10-12 new acquisitions per year, contributing to publishing division profit goals
- Develop and maintain productive relationships with authors, agents, and project collaborators—as well as internal staff in Managing Editorial, Art, Production, Publicity, Marketing, and other departments
- Assist in developing publishing plans for acquired titles
- Develop and manage individual book budgets and P & L statements in collaboration with the Production team and Finance Director.
- Prepare presentations and present as needed for sales conferences and other company meetings, as well as industry conferences and events
- Review all contracts for titles of responsibility and manage them from signing to payment process.
- Compile, analyze and provide financial information to Finance Director such as unit costs, royalty advances, etc. for all titles-this may be there
- Participate in post-pub analysis
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Broad knowledge of the business books market and the other publishing categories in which Little, Brown publishes.
- At least 5 years acquisition experience or the equivalent.
- Strong professional relationships with authors, literary agents, and key corporate leaders in this market, with a demonstrated ability to develop and further such relationships.
- Ability to remain ahead of the curve by identifying and cultivating emerging authors, as well as seeking out innovative ideas.
- Excellent interpersonal, presentation, written and oral communication skills
- Excellent organizational skills
- Experience in negotiating deals and general financial literacy.
