Depending on need and availability, positions within this classification typically average approximately 25-30 hours per week with the possibility of additional assignments such as field trips, athletic events, etc.
Under general supervision of the administrator of the Transportation department, operates school buses on regularly scheduled passenger routes transporting students and school groups to and from schools, events, and on special field trips, in accordance with requirements of school transportation schedules and traffic laws.
APPLICANT FILING INFORMATION: This recruitment is open to the public. An eligibility list will be established to fill vacancies for full time, part time, evening, summer, and substitute positions throughout the duration of the eligibility list. Eligibility lists typically last for twelve months. Vacant positions are filled from the top three ranks. Pursuant to PC Rule 6.2.10, the eligibility list established for this recruitment may be used for another related classification at the same or lower salary.
- Current three-year driving record (request a form "K4" at a local California DMV office or via mail request by filling out a California DMV INF 1125 form by visiting: https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/detail/forms/inf/inf1125). The K4 form should be dated within 30 days of submitting your application.
- Type-1 School Bus Special Driver Certificate with code 0, 1, or 6 restrictions (from DMV)
- Class A or Class B California Driver License with passenger endorsement or equivalent
- Current medical certificate approved by the DMV
- Current first aid card
- Drives a school bus or transportation vehicle over assigned routes in accordance with an established time schedule.
- Transports children to and from school.
- Loads and unloads students safely at designated stops and on study trips.
- Adheres to District policies and procedures regarding student discipline, and public contact with parents and community members.
- Performs daily safety inspections.
- Stops traffic and escorts children across streets, when necessary.
- Prepares daily reports on student loads, mileage, type of trip, and standby time.
- Reports problems or equipment malfunctions.
- Transports children with special needs.
- Washes, sweeps, mops, and polishes the interior of a school bus or transportation vehicle.
- Performs minor first aid.
- Cleans up after ill children.
- May remove graffiti from bus seats.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS AMONG RELATED CLASSES
Bus Driver operates a school bus, over designated routes within established time schedules, transporting students to and from school and on special event trips.
Dispatcher prepares student transportation routes and bus driver schedules for home-to-school, special education and extra-curricular trips, and provide work direction and guidance to bus drivers
Bus Driver Trainer assists in planning and supervising the school pupil transportation program to train drivers, and to do other work as directed.Education:

Special:
- Possession of a Type-1 School Bus Special Driver Certificate issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles.
- Possession of a valid Class A or Class B California Driver License with passenger endorsement or equivalent, including current medical certificate approved by the California Department of Motor Vehicles.
- Must be able to be insured, and continue to be insurable, by the District's liability insurance carrier.
- Applicants must provide the Personnel Commission Office with a copy of their current ten year driving record, obtainable from any office of the California Department of Motor Vehicles, at the time of application.
- This classification has been designated as safety-sensitive in accordance with Public Law 102-143 and requires a pre-employment drug test as well as a continued drug-free lifestyle for continued employment.
- Successfully complete a pre-employment physical examination.

- Provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code and the Education Code and the California Administrative Code, Title 13 applicable to the transportation of students.
- Drive a Type-1, 76 passenger, or more, standard shift or automatic transmission school bus with air brakes safely and efficiently.
- Maintain appropriate student behavior on a school bus.
- Follow oral and written directions.
- Learn the proper methods of bus safety inspections and maintenance.
- Handle situations with tact and diplomacy.
