What are the responsibilities and job description for the Part-time Instructor – Prep position at Hackbright Academy, Inc?
The goal of Hackbright’s Prep program is to help learners prepare for admittance to a programming and/ or software engineering bootcamp. Prep Instructors help achieve this goal by delivering lectures on core programming topics, offering technical support to students during lab exercises, and advise students on how to pass a technical admissions interview for the bootcamp of their choice. Location and time This is a remote, student-facing position. Class meets from 6:30pm–9pm PST on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and 10am–2pm PST on Saturdays for 5 weeks. Regardless of class meeting schedule, instructors should also be able to work an additional 1–3 hours per week for lesson prep and office hours. Day-to-Day Activities The primary activities of a Hackbright instructor are: lecturing, giving code reviews in the labs, and working with students in groups and one-on-one. Curriculum including lecture slides, handouts, lab materials, etc. will be provided to the lecturer ahead of time, and the instructor will be able to ask questions of senior staff regarding lecture content. Class typically starts with a 60–80 min. lecture followed by a lab exercise. Course Topics The course covers programming and software engineering fundamentals with Python as the primary language. This material includes variables, data types, control flow, functions, lists, and learning how to solve code challenges required to obtain admission to coding bootcamps. Employment Period and Supervision The instructor employment period ideally begins 7–14 days prior to the first day of class in order to begin staff training and it ends on the last day of class but may continue to the next Prep cohort. Instructors report to the Program Manager, however they will also be supported and overseen by other members of the Education department. Compensation Hourly compensation is based on experience in both lecturing/education and software engineering/programming.
