Overview
The Manager, Animal Facility is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the animal facility overseeing the administration and technical management of the Laboratory Animal Facility at the Center for Discovery and Innovation (CDI).
The Center for Discovery and Innovation- CDI was established by Hackensack Meridian Health (HMH) as an academic basic and translational research enterprise to rapidly translate science innovation to the clinic and to improve outcomes for patients with cancer, infectious diseases, autoimmune disease and other acute and chronic diseases. The CDI has grown rapidly since its origins in 2019, and now has 32 labs, 190 scientists and allied personnel supported by 60 NIH grants and more than 30 other grants and contracts. Areas of expertise include genomics, epigenetics, drug resistance,immunology and immunotherapy,stem cell biology, drug discovery, diagnostics and biomarker development, and pharmacology.
Responsibilities
A day in the life of a Manager, Animal Facility at Hackensack Meridian Health includes :
- Oversees the supervision and performance standards of all animals care team members, including supervisory staff.
- Assures medical center compliance with all federal, accreditation and industry standards with regard to the laboratory animal / basic research program; including but not limited to : - Animal Welfare Act - Code of Federal Regulations Title 9 and amendments (9 CFR), - FDA Good Laboratory Practices as they pertain to the animal / basic research program, - DEA with regard for the use of controlled substances, - National Institute of Health's Animal Welfare Assurance, - OSHA and EPA regulations, - Institutional Animal Care, - Use Committee (IACUC), - American Association for the Accreditation of Animal Care International (AAALAC) guidelines.
- Monitors research activities to assure the experimental protocols are being carried out as approved.
- Works closely with Biosafety Officer and Radiation Officer in developing Standard Operating Procedures for the use of Biohazards within the animal facility (e.g. radiation, carcinogens, and genetically altered viruses).
- Establishes and oversees service contract on all specialized equipment in the facility, evaluates purchasing needs, approves invoices for payments, oversees and approves the billing of services to users of the facility.
- Ensures daily compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for all aspects of the daily operation of the department including but not limited to administration, husbandry, safety, colony maintenance, animal health program, equipment operation, quality control, biological monitoring and training.
- Assists in the development of training programs for department staff, researchers and their staff with regard to the laws, regulations, animal handling, zoologic techniques and personal safety.
- Working knowledge of the latest technological advancements in animal research. Including the creation of bio-engineered transgenic animals, bio-containment systems, environmental and animal monitoring system, and barrier sustained research models.
- Oversees animal health programs, in conjunction with the clinical veterinarian, and assures all animal care and use procedures, policies and activities are in accord with public law, accrediting agency standards, and public policy guidelines .
- Monitors research activities to assure investigator research procedures are in accord with approved protocol.
- Adheres to the standards identified in HMH Organizational & Managerial Competencies.
