Scenic Shop Manager

Reports to: Senior Technical Director

 

JOB DESCRIPTIONS/DUTIES

Responsibilities shall include, but are not limited to the following: 

  • Oversees the day-to-day operation of HCT scenic shop, ensuring that pieces are built to design specifications, on-time and on budget.
  • Collaborates with the Technical Directors to estimate and track building material costs and shop labor hours for each production.
  • Reports directly to the Senior Technical Director in matters of equipment, scheduling, staffing requirements, pre-production, set-up, run, strike/restore and maintenance.
  • Responsible for creating and managing build timelines in accordance with production schedules, scenic shop teams, assignments, and shop space requirements.   
  • Collaborates with the Technical Directors, Production Department Heads, Designers and Directors to address notes from technical rehearsals and performances in order to maintain the artistic integrity of the productions. 
  • Ensures that all shop tools and hand tools and theatrical equipment, including rigging hardware and soft goods are functional and properly maintained for the duration of each production. 
  • Create and maintain an efficient shop timeline to ensure pieces are built and delivered to individual production schedules. 
  • Assist in coordination and supervision of the install of all scenic elements.
  • Prepares and ensures that all Shop payroll paperwork is submitted in a timely manner.
  • Assists the Shop staff in preparation and planning of scenic elements for load in, and installation. 
  • Responsible for inspecting and maintaining all shop equipment and tools. 
  • Responsible for ordering Shop Building materials.
  • Assists other Departments with setup, strike and restore of show equipment including set, props, rigging, projections, lighting and sound. 
  • Maintaining a safe working environment at all times by adhering to Hale Centre Theatre safety policies and procedures 
  • Provide a safe & clean work environment onstage, backstage, shop and storage areas for staff and performers alike. 
  • Create and maintain complete and accurate shop records including: equipment tracking and inventory, detail drawings, shop and equipment orders, etc. 
  • Facilitate the transport of the company assets between locations.
  • Ensure all pertinent Hale Centre Theatre policies and agreements are understood and implemented. 
  • Any other projects as assigned by the Senior Technical Director or Production Manager. 
 

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS:

  • A diploma or certificate in theatre production, technical design, or a related field from a recognized institution, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Experience in Theatrical Stage Carpentry is required along with knowledge of current theatrical technology and professional work standards. 
  • Prior knowledge of Rigging, Lighting, Sound and projection equipment and safety standards. 
  • An ability to work well in a team atmosphere and possess strong leadership skills. 
  • Be comfortable working independently. 
  • Possess strong desire to hone existing skills and a willingness to learn new ones. 
  • Be highly resourceful and possess efficient problem solving and time management skills. 
  • Demonstrate strong writing, mathematical, analytical and communication skills. 
  • Ability to read technical drawings. 
  • Ability to efficiently manage budgets.


MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum five (5) years’ experience in carpentry for professional theatre. 
  • Valid driver’s license and comfortable driving cargo van, box truck, truck and trailer. 
  • Experience supervising a crew and projects
  • Comfortable working at heights in excess of 75’.
Minimum base salary for this position is $90,000/year. Compensation commensurate with experience. Individual compensation packages are based on various factors unique to each candidate, including skill set, experience, and qualifications.
