Organizational Scope:

 

Reporting directly to the building principal and working under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement with the Nashoba Regional Education Association – Unit A, the Teacher advances the NRSD mission of inspiring and challenging all learners to realize their unique potential and to become active contributors to their community.

 

Through a lens of equity, and as appropriate for the grade level of students, teachers integrate social emotional learning into the curriculum and engage in culturally responsive teaching. 

           

Position Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates the ability to work with second language students.
  • Assists in the selection process for determining ELL services.
  • Demonstrates ability to screen and assess students with a second language spoken at home and administers the fall and spring state mandated assessment tests.
  • Develops, implements, and consistently monitors goals and objectives for students in accordance with the English Language Learner frameworks.
  • Communicates regularly with parents of students in order to assist in the development of language acquisition in the home and to ensure student success.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work with all content area and specialist teachers regularly to ensure the success of each student.
  • Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
  • Plans a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests and abilities of the students.
  • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
  • Prepares for classes assigned.
  • Sets and maintains standards of classroom behavior.
  • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and, in harmony with the goals, establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units and projects to communicate these objectives to students.
  • Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media.
  • Implements by instruction and action the district’s philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives.
  • Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.
  • Seeks the assistance of district specialists as required regarding diagnosing students’ learning disabilities.
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
  • Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation.
  • Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct, and for the classroom, develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
  • Makes provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so.
  • Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s) and, cooperatively with department heads, contributes to the evaluation their job performance.
  • Continues with personal professional development
  • Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Job Qualifications:

 

Must be highly qualified by DESE licensure standards; certified in ESL/ELL, have bilingual skills, have a background in reading instruction.

 

Must have extensive knowledge of second language learning and sheltering content as well as familiarity with the English Language Proficiency Benchmarks and Outcomes Document, Massachusetts standards-based curriculum and standard and alternative methods of assessment.

 

Must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and possess a high level of capability with technology. 

 

Must be able to assist in the protection of students and school property, assist the principal in fire and other emergency drills as required by law and School Committee policy.

 

Physical Demands:

 

Physical demands vary in keeping with the assignment and age of the students, but the position generally requires the ability to walk and stand on tile flooring, to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds, and to bend and twist regularly at the waist, knees and neck.  

 

Depending on assignment, much of the work is performed in a typical classroom environment requiring minimal to light physical effort.  This may include everyday discomforts and distractions typical of a school setting, such as proximity to students and colleagues, temperature variations, frequent interruptions and moderate noise.   This position may require the ability to operate a computer keyboard and standard office equipment

 

Terms of Employment, Evaluation of Performance, and Salary:

 

The Teacher is a Nashoba Regional School District Unit A position.  Terms of employment, including evaluation and salary, are covered by the provisions of the Unit A collective bargaining agreement currently in effect.
