Our Agency:
Half Dreaming is a full-service graphic design and marketing agency. We work with a variety of clients across industries and sizes, from small mom-and-pop shops to large national and global brands. We work across the marketing and design ecosystem to give our clients custom solutions that move their organization forward. Our heart is in partnering with purpose-driven organizations who are seeking to make a difference in their communities. If you’re looking to learn fast, think big, and make an impact this summer, we’d like to meet you.
About the Position:
This is a very hands-on internship. You will not be stapling files in a backroom - you will be working on real-world projects. We’ll be balancing a lot of different projects so we will move fast, get a lot done, and create meaningful results for our clients. This internship is not an introduction to design; applicants will be expected to have familiarity with design and marketing tools and project execution. There are no individual actors. We’ll work in teams for deliverables, and all work will be reviewed with the team. You’ll work closely with agency owners, K.J. and Caitlyn Atwood. This internship has the possibility of turning into a part or full-time work position at the end of the internship period. Additional bonuses may be awarded at the end of summer based on performance.
Day-to-day Responsibilities:
- We work on a bit of everything, so every day may look different.
- We consistently have branding projects you will be able to contribute towards.
- Social media management will be a large component of the work this summer.
- Animation, web design, and SEO/AIO will be heavily utilized in this role.
- Support project management, business and creative strategy efforts.
- Contributing to group brainstorm sessions to inform projects.
Who are you?:
You’re a creative problem-solver with a passion for design and marketing. You are self-motivated, eager to learn, thrive in collaborative environments, embrace feedback, and aren’t afraid to experiment with new tools or ideas. If you’re detail-oriented, curious, and excited to learn across industries, and mix strategic and creative approaches, you’ll thrive in this role. In your cover letter, please include an emoji that describes you. More technically, our preferred qualifications are applicants who have experience in some combination of the below skills:
- Social Media: Experience in strategy and design for Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok and X is preferred. We use Metricool for scheduling and management, so experience with some management software (ex. Metricool, Sprout, etc.) is a plus.
- Graphic Design: Experience in the Adobe Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign) is expected.
- Motion Graphics: Experience using Adobe After Effects, Procreate Dreams, Blender, or another animation software is a plus. Our typical motion graphic scope includes adding movement to social media posts, website animations, building fully-custom explainer videos, etc.
- Web Design: We get a lot of website projects, so a general understanding of web design and execution is expected. Experience with Webflow and Figma is a plus.
- Search Engine Optimization: Experience with strategy and execution of SEO is a key area of services we offer. We use SEMrush and Google Analytics, so experience in these software specifically is a plus but not required.
- AI Optimization (Generative Engine Optimization): This is a new service area that has evolved in the last year, and we are striving to be at the forefront of this area. While you may not have had experience with it, an interest to learn it is important.
- Project Management: Team members need to generally be organized and communicative with the rest of the team for successful project execution. Having strong written and verbal communication is key for client interactions. Additionally, we use Notion for our project management and client portals, so familiarity with this or a similar platform is a plus.
- Collaborative: As previously mentioned, everything we do is with the team. We do a lot of brainstorming and expect everyone to show up prepared with ideas. We are also always open to iterating on deliverables, processes, etc., so we want to hear what you think and how we can all improve for ourselves and our clients.
What You Will Gain:
This internship is designed to be an extremely hands-on opportunity that prepares you for a position in graphic design and marketing, including contributing to real-world client projects, learning how to communicate with clients, and building and running an effective business. We will balance helping each person with their long-term career goals with the demand of our client load. We expect all interns to walk away at the end of the summer with:
- A robust portfolio with real-world client work across multiple industries and skillsets.
- Hands-on experience with industry standard tools and software.
- Mentorship from passionate professionals who value creativity and collaboration.
- Insight into agency life from client pitches to project execution and every step in between.
- A deeper understanding of how design, strategy, and technology intersect to create actionable and impactful results for clients.
- Networking opportunities in Charleston’s thriving business community.
- Focused weekly learning opportunities in specific areas you are interested in diving deeper into, regardless of if we have current client work in that scope.
- A recommendation or potential job offer based on performance.
Application Process:
- Phase 1: You are here. The initial phase will include review of the application form, your portfolio, cover letter, and resume. Applications should be submitted to the Google Form, linked below. All applicants will be informed of their Phase 1 decision by Friday, May 2.
- Phase 2: Those who are selected from Phase 1 will be offered an individual, 30-minute interview with Half Dreaming’s leadership team. This phase will begin the week of Monday, May 5. The Half Dreaming team will coordinate a virtual interview time when the applicant is invited to Phase 2.
- Phase 3: Those who move beyond both Phase 1 and 2 will participate in a 1-hour group interview with other applicants as a part of the final round. This group interview will take place virtually the week of Monday, May 12. Following this phase, internship position offers will be made.
