Dosimetrist
The Medical Dosimetrist is responsible for producing patient treatment plans from the Radiation Oncologist's prescription, makes calculations, contours, moulds, blocks, and shields necessary for treatment plans. Assists with the localization and estimation of tumor volumes. Assists Physicist with major machine checks and calibrations. Performs quality assurance testing on planning system. Treatment planning functions are performed on adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
- Must be a graduate of an accredited School of Radiation Therapy Technology or Radiation Dosimetry program.
- Bachelor's Degree in Radiological Science preferred.
- Board certification in Medical Dosimetry, or Board eligibility by the Medical Dosimetry Certification Board are preferred.
- Registration in Radiation Therapy by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists preferred.
- Licensed by the State of Florida to operate ionizing radiation machines and equipment preferred.
- Certification by the Medical Dosimetry Certification Board must be obtained within 2 years of becoming board eligible.
- Three to Five years of experience in either Radiation Therapy Technology and/or Radiation Dosimetry is preferred.
- Good communications and organizational skills a must.
- Proficiency with computer systems required.
- Must have working knowledge of physics, anatomy, oncology, pathology, and radiation safety.
- The education and expertise necessary to generate radiation dose distributions and dose calculations in collaboration with the Medical Physicist and Radiation Oncologist is required.
- Must be knowledgeable in the operation of complex radiation producing machines and understand their functions.
- Design a treatment plan by means of computer and / or manual computation that will deliver a prescribed radiation dose and field placement technique.
- Assists in tumor localization procedures prior to initial treatment and reconfirms proper treatment areas.
- Measures and computes dosage for prescribed treatment. Verifies mathematical accuracy of all calculations.
- Participates in the performance of machine checks and calibrations with the physicist.
- Performs microdosimetry dose measurements when required.
- Communicates activities to patients and workers.
- Teaches students during their dosimetry rotation
- Possesses knowledge and skills to care for patients in the following age groups: Pediatric. Adolescent. Adult. Geriatric.
