Summary
Halifax Humane Society is building a tremendous lifesaving culture, and we are hiring dedicated, brilliant people to join our team. The Foster & Transfer Program Team Members acts with urgency to accomplish the critical task of moving eligible pets from intake to foster homes and rescue organizations. Team Members have increased responsibility or skills and can make on-the-spot decisions to accomplish tasks. The Foster & Transfer Program Team Members works across all animal shelter departments, veterinary services, volunteer services, and marketing functions to access all tools and resources needed to accomplish tasks.
Hiring Range: This position starts at $21.50 per hour and can increase to $25 per hour with previous animal sheltering, foster program, or transfer program experience.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Support and advocate for the philosophy, policies, and programs of the Halifax Humane Society.
- Recruit, train, supervise, and motivate foster families to expand the Foster Program; ensure Foster Families feel appreciated; provide friendly and respectful guidance, feedback, and opportunities to contribute.
- Coordinate and conduct Transfer Program operations, including, but not limited to, participation in animal selection, records management, and maintaining relationships with transfer partners, including rescue organizations and area animal shelters.
- Develop, update, enhance, and edit Foster and Transfer training and program materials as needed.
- Develop a general knowledge of the animals in Halifax Humane Society’s care; deliver superior customer service; assist adopters, foster families, and transfer partners by gathering information to match them with appropriate animals; arrange introductions and pet-to-pet meets; acquire/provide medical records, health certificates (when necessary), and follow-ups as needed or required.
- Work directly with and support volunteers on all aspects and protocols of lifesaving care and outcome programs, including program protocols, cleaning protocols, specific animal behavior and care, animal handling, transportation requirements and procedures, data entry, and communications to maximize meaningful volunteer contributions.
- Work collaboratively with Halifax Humane Society’s team members in all areas of operations to achieve lifesaving goals; follow Halifax Humane Society policies, procedures, and task lists for daily lifesaving outcome assignments, including accurate and timely communications, work completion, data entry, and recordkeeping.
- Maintain a safe workplace, value and model safe work practices, adhere to organizational safety practices and rules, and communicate to leadership about unsafe practices and conditions.
Skills and Experience:
- Customer-centric, non-judgmental approach to engaging with adopters, partners, visitors, volunteers, and colleagues; familiarity and comfort with an open admission animal shelter and conversational adoption process.
- Ability to work with, leash, kennel, walk, and handle cats and dogs, including those with health and/or behavior conditions/concerns; essential ability to identify and speak to medical and behavioral characteristics of dogs and cats.
- Strong interpersonal skills, a team player, personable, professional, able to get along with people from different backgrounds, and the ability to handle sensitive and confidential situations.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with well-developed organizational skills to juggle competing tasks and demands.
- Resourceful, get-it-done attitude; initiative to assist in any area or process; problem-solving, seeking answers independently and enthusiastically; flexibility to persist until goals are achieved.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office products; familiarity with shelter software/animal management software or desire to learn.
Physical and Other Requirements:
- Routinely lift 40 pounds and perform daily strenuous activities, including lifting, carrying, reaching, stooping, squatting, cleaning, and bending.
- Perform repetitive tasks for extended periods, including typing, sitting, walking, arm, and hand motion.
- Work indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
- Exposure to dogs, cats, and other animals of all sizes, temperaments, and medical status.
- Valid driver’s license, meeting Halifax Humane Society’s driver qualification standards; ability to travel, including overnight stays, when needed.
- Daily hours and days of the week may vary according to the needs of the department schedule; the position includes weekends, nights, and holiday work.
