Job Summary: (All Incumbents may not perform all duties.)
Operates one or more pieces of heavy equipment at a skilled level such as: a track hoe, loader, dozer, off road dump truck, grader, roll off truck; operates light equipment such as mowing equipment, farm tractors, hydro seeder, flatbed truck etc.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities: (All incumbents may not perform all duties.)
- Operates bulldozers, track hoe, and front-end loaders to cover trash.
- Operates Roll Off trucks to transport solid waste.
- Operates mowing machines including bush hogs, riding and push mowers to cut grass; cuts down dead trees; clears storm drains; edges sidewalks; plants shrubs; and collects litter/trash.
- Performs basic maintenance on all equipment including washing, changing oil, greasing, sharpening blades and changing flat tires.
- May assist in performing unskilled or semi-skilled labor such as digging/covering trash, collecting trash and residential garbage, and/or trimming trees and shrubs.
- May operate a pick-up truck when assigned to litter control.
- May assist in training new employees and in assigning, checking and approving work of Laborers and other Equipment Operators.
- Regular and predictable attendance is required.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications Required:
Education and Experience:
- Ability to read and write.
- Four years combined Equipment Operator I or II experience required.
- Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the minimum level of qualifications stated above.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid Class A or B Driver’s License and a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
- Due to the safety-sensitive nature of this position, incumbents will be subject to random drug testing.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of geography of the County including major streets and landmarks.
- Knowledge of preventive maintenance procedures.
- Knowledge of traffic rules and regulations and safe operation of heavy equipment.
- Expert knowledge of and skill in operating various types of heavy equipment.
- Ability to take and follow directions from supervisor. Ability to give directions to and gain compliance from assigned staff.
- Ability to perform strenuous and routine work.
- Ability to lift objects of up to 50 pounds.

Essential functions occasionally require the ability to move oneself by crawling on hands and knees; position oneself by crouching or kneeling; reach overhead; push or pull items; move/transport items weighing up to 25lbs. Additionally incumbents must occasionally be able to discriminate colors and handle confidential information.
