Who we Are

Hall Prangle & Schoonveld is a leading national trial defense law firm with a longstanding reputation for our success at trial, especially in high-exposure cases related to healthcare law. Our attorneys assert a client-centric mindset that guides each case, while maintaining a collegial culture where exceptional lawyers want to work.

About the Role

HPS is seeking to hire a full-time Associate in its Appellate Department in our Chicago office. The associate will work closely with the Appellate team on appellate matters as well as with small teams of attorneys and paralegals on medical malpractice matters, all working collaboratively to efficiently provide our clients with the best possible results. HPS attorneys have autonomy over their work schedule; however, all are encouraged to maintain "core" office hours, when possible, to both maintain a collaborative work environment and to take advantage of the welcoming accessibility to firm partners. Overall, the right candidate will be skilled and hard-working as well as pleasant and personable.

Responsibilities

  • Review and analyze trail records and other documents
  • Research and analyze case law
  • Draft legal documents including persuasive briefs and appellate documents, pleadings, motions, written discovery, and agreements
  • Provide legal counsel and representation to the firm's clients from pre-trial through trial
  • Attend court hearings (including advocating in appellate courts before appellate judges), depositions, trials, and client meetings
  • Assist trail counsel in framing issues at trial and in preserving the record for appeal
  • Collaborate with senior associates and partners on case strategy
  • Contribute to business development and client relationship management

What You will Need to Succeed

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school
  • Active membership in the Illinois State Bar
  • 3-5 years' appellate experience
  • Strong understanding of State and Federal court rules and procedures
  • Strong litigation, negotiation, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent legal research and writing skills
  • Exceptional oral and written communication
  • How You will Grow

Hall Prangle & Schoonveld's senior attorneys, education committee, and mentorship program prioritize providing our attorneys with the tools to learn and grow within the firm. HPS promotes opportunities to pursue Continuing Legal Education through internal presentations as well as through external Associations. The firm fosters a learning environment by trusting its attorneys with substantive case work, allowing them to take ownership of their own cases, while at the same time supporting a collaborative work environment.
