The purpose of this job is to oversee mechanical, electrical, and plumbing operations for schools and related facilities, and to assist with planning/design of new schools or renovation projects.
Responsibilities
- Acts in a professional, respectful, and courteous manner at all times.
- Creates a customer-focused climate and provides quality services and support to schools and other stakeholders.
- Complies with applicable district, state, and federal codes, laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.
- Manages the planning and implementing of maintenance activities to ensure the most effective utilization of resources to support the vision and mission of the school district.
- Supervises, directs, counsels, disciplines, and evaluates assigned staff.
- Coordinates daily work activities; organizes, prioritizes, and assigns work; develops work schedules; monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work; consults with assigned staff; assists with complex/problem situations; and provides technical expertise in assigned area.
- Plans, coordinates, and schedules projects; reviews and approves work orders; establishes/approves priorities on repairs and renovations; develops cost estimates for repair projects; ensures availability of required equipment, tools, and materials; schedules/coordinates delivery of materials and availability of contracted services; prepares job cost reports.
- Evaluates effectiveness of operations and programs in assigned areas; identifies and recommends improvements or other appropriate changes.
- Develops, recommends, and implements long and short term plans, goals, and objectives for assigned area.
- Develops, recommends, and implements budget for assigned area; monitors expenditures to ensure compliance with approved budget.
- Responds to complaints and questions related to division operations; provides information, researches problems, and initiates problem resolution; converses with parents regarding their concerns pertaining to safety of school buildings.
- Manages corrective and preventative maintenance, renovation, contracted renovation of existing schools and related facilities and construction of new schools and facilities.
- Ensures that physical structures, equipment/system operations, and repair/maintenance activities are in compliance with applicable laws and regulations; ensures adherence to established safety procedures; monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees, students, and other individuals; initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations.
- Conducts inspections of school buildings, equipment, and facilities to identify problems or necessary repair/maintenance work; identifies and reports potentially hazardous or dangerous situations; reviews environmental surveys indicating problems and schools and initiates appropriate corrective actions; responds to emergency situations.
- Consults with supervisor, Board members, County Commissioners, school officials, consultants, and other officials to review department operations and activities, review/resolve problems, receive advice/direction, and provide recommendations; consults with school principals regarding maintenance/renovation activities; coordinates work activities with other departments, skilled craft workers, outside contractors, or others as needed.
- Reviews field reports from in-house personnel and from outside architects and consultants indicating progress of projects.
- Coordinates and oversees work performed by outside contractors; advises on selection of contractors for various maintenance or renovation services; obtains bids from outside contractors for maintenance services or for materials.
- Follows established procedures for ensuring assigned areas are safe.
- Communicates through proper channels to keep supervisor and other appropriate personnel informed of impending problems or events of unusual nature.
- Works collaboratively with all stakeholders.
- Attends work and arrives to work on time.
- Maintains confidentiality.
- Adheres to the Teacher Code of Ethics as defined by Tennessee Law.
Qualifications
Knowledge/Education/Experience:
Vocational or technical degree or apprenticeship in plumbing, HVAC, or electrical trade; supplemented by college level course work or vocational training in business management or supervision; supplemented by five (5) years previous experience and/or training that includes plumbing, HVAC, electrical, or construction trades, project management, budget development, and management/supervision; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position. Maintain valid driver’s license. Travel to schools and other locations as needed.

Compensation:
Salary is based on a combination of relevant education and experience.
