DEFINITION: Under general supervision, maintains the flow of traffic in the school zone to provide for the safety of children going to and from school; directs traffic to assure a safety and practical speed throughout the school zone; stops traffic as needed to maintain stability throughout the school period; and performs related duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. TASKS: Directs traffic through school zone and bus parking area; guides and assists children in crossing the street and in compliance with the traffic signals; maintains security of the children throughout the school zone area; helps the school buses to move through the school bus unloading area safely and without difficulty; directs the flow of traffic to reduce speed and increase awareness of the children.
Maintains the posted speed limit for the school zone; operates blue lights to indicate school crossing area and to provide daily morning and afternoon coverage of the school zone; remains constantly alert to all possibilities, and uses flashlights and whistle to direct traffic; meets with supervisor to discuss problems, suggest solutions, and provide exchange of information for all of the School Patrol Officers; attends training as required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A high school diploma or GED. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: This classification involves working with children and adults in school zones during morning arrival and afternoon departure of children in school zones. The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office promotes a drug/alcohol-free work environment through the use of pre-employment and random drug testing.
