What are the responsibilities and job description for the Health Safety Environment Technician position at Hammond Group?
SUMMARY
This position is a plant-level EHS role at HGI, a specialty chemical manufacturing company. The EHS Technician is responsible for assuring shift personnel follow company EHS policies and procedures and for completing EHS activities on-site to ensure compliance with all EHS legal and voluntary requirements.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Complete activities as assigned from the Environmental, Health, & Safety Calendar with support from plant and corporate EHS.
- Conduct internal environmental, occupational health, and safety audits and inspections of plant processes and personnel, including verifying that corrective actions have been completed.
- Manage the collection and evaluation of industrial hygiene data, including air monitoring, vent monitoring, wipe sampling, and employee observations.
- Assist with the implementation and evaluation of medical surveillance testing programs (hearing, chemicals, respirator fit tests).
- Assist plant personnel with application and understanding of safety requirements, including LOTO, machine guarding, working at heights, confined spaces, etc.
- Promote a strong safety culture within the work crews; ensure employees are properly trained and adhering to safety rules.
- Provide administrative support for safety and environmental programs at the plant level, including scheduling safety meetings, incident investigations, training, or other EHS events as assigned.
- Maintain waste manifests, profiles, and records and ensure new waste streams are identified and characterized prior to shipment.
- Prepare purchase orders for environmental and safety equipment and supplies.
- Maintain a clean, safe work environment at all times.
- Comply with company policies, procedures, and regulatory standards.
- Any other tasks assigned by management.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or associate degree preferred.
- Two years’ experience in Safety or industrial hygiene in a manufacturing setting.
- Knowledge of OSHA occupational hazards and safety regulations.
- Knowledge of environmental compliance with federal, state, and local EPA regulations.
- Must be able to use Microsoft Office tools to perform data entry and prepare reports.
- Able to plan and prioritize work and manage time effectively.
- Able to work as a team member and interact with people in a professional, courteous manner.
QUALITY SYSTEMS RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintain EHS compliance monitoring records
LANGUAGE SKILLS
- Proficiency in English is required. Must have excellent interpersonal skills. Written and verbal communication skills are required.
REASONING ABILITY
- Ability to comply with procedures, work instructions, and checklists. Ability to accurately compare actual conditions to performance standards.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Able to carry equipment as much as 30lbs, unassisted and safely push or pull items as needed.
- Safely climb stairs and ladders to access production equipment while wearing all assigned PPE.
- Ability to wear required PPE: Full-face air-purifying respirator, steel-toe work boots, gloves, hard hat, safety glasses, ear plugs, and coveralls.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Must be able to work outside of normal business hours as needed to accomplish objectives and support responsibilities. Consistent and regular attendance is required.
- Work in various climate conditions consistent with a manufacturing environment, including cold, humid, and hot work environments.
