Half-Time Evening Custodian

HAMPSHIRE REGIONAL HIGH SCHOOL CUSTODIAN DESCRIPTION: A Hampshire Regional High School Custodian is responsible for assisting the Head Custodian with maintaining the school’s interior and exterior facilities. This includes, but is not limited to, security, cleanliness and operating excellence to provide full support of the educational program at all times. SUPERVISION: Works under the supervision of the Head Custodian and Building Principal. Evaluated yearly by the Head Custodian or designee. JOB ENVIRONMENT: The position may require going on the roof, around the grounds of HRHS, and traveling to different locations to pick up necessary tools and equipment for the maintenance of the buildings and grounds. PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: Assists with the opening and closing of the facilities as required; Checks daily to ensure that all exit doors are either open or locked according to the Principal's facility security plan and that all panic door hardware are working properly during the hours of building occupancy; Checks environmental conditions (e.g., heat, ventilation, air conditioning systems) as required to ensure comfortable building environment and appropriately reports problems if a remedy cannot be corrected; Raises and lowers the U.S. Flag, and State Flag if available, as required on a daily basis; Makes minor repairs as appropriate and remedies unsafe or unhealthy conditions if possible, but reports the need for major repairs and or very unsafe and unhealthy conditions to the Head Custodian or Principal as needed; Performs janitorial work in assigned areas as well as throughout both the interior and exterior facilities. (e.g. picking up rubbish and debris, emptying and cleaning of all rubbish and recycling containers, disposing of trash or relocating of recycled materials as required, sweeping and washing hallways and classroom floors, dusting, cleaning and polishing furniture and shades, vacuuming carpets, striping wax and re-waxing floors, mopping (dry and wet), scrubbing, washing and disinfecting floors, sinks, drinking fountains, toilets, etc. (including bathrooms, locker rooms, kitchens, cafeterias), washing walls, windows and mirrors, dusting and cleaning light fixtures, including replacing light bulbs as needed; Checks for quantity of disposable supplies (e.g., toilet tissue, paper towels, hand soap, etc.) and replenishes such supplies as needed (i.e., to not run out); Moves furniture, equipment, etc., as needed, not only on a daily basis to perform cleaning duties and to assist with the daily operation of the schools, but to set up for special events and activities; Keeps cleaning equipment and custodial facilities clean, neat and in good repair and order and performs minor maintenance and repairs on equipment and to facilities; Performs yard work and minor landscaping chores as to maintain the school grounds in a safe, healthy and attractive condition; Shovels, snow blows, and sands walks, driveways, parking areas, and steps, as needed and required; Assists in emergency situations as would be considered appropriate for a custodian; Works in cooperation with fellow custodians and with other school district employees, under the immediate direction of the Head Custodian and the Principal, to complete his/her job goal and daily responsibilities; Is friendly and helpful to all visitors on daily basis; As needed, will report to work, if available, in emergency and unusual circumstances; On an equitable basis, will volunteer for building coverage related to special events outside of the normal working day, shift, etc.; and Perform other duties as required. General Expectations Works independently with general guidance from Head Custodian Maintains cooperative relationships with students and adults Manages time to accomplish multiple tasks and meet deadlines Communicates effectively both orally and in writing EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Has a high school diploma or equivalent; Has valid Massachusetts driver's license; Has experience in custodial work preferred, but not required; Has knowledge of and experience using custodial cleaning supplies and equipment preferred, but not required; Has basic knowledge and experience regarding the repair of custodial cleaning equipment preferred, but not required; Has knowledge related to electrical, plumbing, heating/HVAC, mechanical, and fire alarm systems preferred, but not required; Has ability to work both indoors and outdoors, in various weather conditions and climates, to perform custodial duties and responsibilities such as several hours per day standing, walking, sitting, lifting (i.e., frequently up to 50 lbs. and occasionally over 50 lbs.), bending, reaching, and twisting; Has ability to work well with others to perform custodial duties and responsibilities; Has ability to comprehend and follow both verbal and written directions related to custodial assignments and duties; and Other qualifications as deemed to be required by the school district. Alert, physically assertive and mobile at all times. Lift, push, or pull 50 pounds as required; Mobility to regularly walk, stand, stoop, reach, bend and occasionally run. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT Twelve-month position. Benefits in accordance with support staff Work Policy; salary as established by the Superintendent. WORK HOURS: Monday-Friday, 20 hours per week Four hours per day during the evening shift (6pm to 10pm)
