What are the responsibilities and job description for the Phlebotomist position at Hampton Roads Community Health Center?
We are looking for a Certified Phlebotomist to join our medical team to perform venipuncture on adults and pediatric patients and collects viable specimens from patients; verify test requisitions by comparing information with providers and nursing staff and bringing discrepancies to the attention of the proper personnel. The ideal candidate must have demonstrated experience providing quality patient care with attention to detail.
Under direct supervision, this non-exempt position is responsible for taking tissue samples, blood and other bodily fluids from patients and ensuring all specimens are labelled correctly and prepared for examination by a physician or medical laboratory technologist. Reports to the Director of Nursing.
Performs venipuncture on adults and pediatric patients and collects viable specimens from patients; verifies test requisitions by comparing information with providers and nursing staff and bringing discrepancies to the attention of the proper personnel; verifies patient by reading patient identification, prints labels for patient identification for specimens and ICD coding; tracks collected specimens by initialing, dating, and noting times of collection while maintaining daily logs of collections performed; and tracks and follows up on laboratory results for missing reports.
Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following department procedures, and observing isolation procedures; maintains quality results by following department procedures and testing schedule; maintains adequate inventory of laboratory supplies, ensuring that all supplies are viable before used in patient testing; maintains logbooks and records laboratory tests and results; and records results in the quality-control log identifying and reporting needed changes.
Performs quarterly control procedures on all laboratory equipment in accordance with OSHA and CLIA; performs all in-house testing; resolves unusual test orders by contacting the physician, nurse practitioner, nursing personnel, or reference laboratory referring unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification; and notifying supervisor of unresolved orders.
Performs administrative support work such as word processing, creating spreadsheets, data entry and retrieval; orders, monitors and distributes program supplies/resources; and other information to ensure accuracy and conformance to established procedures and policies; and counsels patients regarding patient responsibilities and rights; adheres to patient confidentiality guidelines.

Candidates must hold a High school diploma or GED, be a Certified Phlebotomist or Registered Medical Assistant, and hold a valid Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification is required for continued employment.
Required Knowledge
- Medical Laboratories – Adept knowledge of specimen collection, venipuncture, phlebotomy, finger sticks, medical laboratory principles, safety protocols, standards, cleanliness, infection control policies, and regulations.
- HIPAA – Knowledge of the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) to ensure the privacy and safeguard patient information.
- Customer Service — Considerable knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service. This includes meeting quality standards for service.
- Technology — Knowledge of general office equipment and personal computers to include word processing, spreadsheet, and related software. Comprehensive knowledge of office systems, practices, procedures, and administration.

- Computer Skills – Utilizes a personal computer with word processing, spreadsheet, and related software in relation to the Electronic Health Records.
